”“For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it. “For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands. Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress; instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle; and it shall make a name for the Lord, an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”“

Message
A Promised Land
On the Tuesday workout at Asylum PM I told a story about one of my patients whom I consider to be an “Every Day Hero”, someone who is not famous and whose deeds have not made it in the news, but who is a hero nonetheless. Today I will tell a story about another Every Day Hero. She is a 66-year-old woman named Kathy Bailey.
Not college educated

Lived a hard life

Married a man who turned into an alcoholic.

Divorced him.

Raised her one son, Lynn. on her own.

Blue collar jobs.

Made sure son grew up going to church and learning proper values.

Son married and had his own son, Austin His wife turned out to be irresponsible and unfaithful. He divorced her. Because she was gallivanting around town and being with other men, he raised his son with Kathy’s help.

Her son was an auto mechanic, growing in success until he got into a major auto accident.

He became and still is quadriplegic because of the accident.

Kathy and her partner, Jimmy, have cared for Lynn and Austin until Austin became an adult. Kathy still cares for her son, Lynn.

Difficulties of raising quadriplegic son. Hardships of life. Tired, fatigued and sometimes feels brokenhearted.

Kathy’s faith in God. She sees blessing despite the hardships. Believes in a hereafter.

Her story reminds me of the song “A Promised Land” by Bruce Springsteen.

The song is written from the perspective of a man but the words also spring true for Kathy. It talks about painful events that knock one down to their knees but the belief in something more that keeps one going:
Blow away the dreams that tear you apart

Blow away the dreams that break your heart

Blow away the lies that leave you nothing

But lost and brokenhearted.

Well, the dogs on Main Street howl cause they understand

If I could take one moment into my hands

Mister, I ain’t a boy, no I’m a man

And I believe in a promised land.

And I believe in a promised land.

Kathy Bailey’s belief inspires me. I tell her story hoping it will inspire you. And, like Kathy, I believe in a promised land.

COT:
Confession and repentance are relatively common words with scary implications. It’s tough for any person, let alone men who feel the need to be strong, protective, and proficient, to admit a weakness or inadequacy. Confession comes at a cost, and we don’t often want to pay that price.

But what are we missing out on if we continually refuse to engage in accountability? What could we begin to experience if we were a measure braver than we were afraid?

The writer of Proverbs 28 weaves the thread of vulnerability and integrity throughout the passage. We see a few verses in that “better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a rich man who is crooked in his ways.” Later in the text, we come to a similar-sounding verse, “Whoever walks in integrity will be delivered, but he who is crooked in his ways will suddenly fall.” Clearly, the author is trying to drive home a point through his repetition: integrity is to be highly valued and is a primary component of a life of freedom.

But how do we increase integrity? How can we ensure that we are developing the right kind of roots, growing deeper in our faith while cultivating the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5)?

Accountability. The conviction and practice of moving out of the shadows and into the light. It’s the fundamental idea written right in the middle of Proverbs 28:

“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Blessed is the one who fears the LORD always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.”

He who confesses his transgressions and forsakes them (i.e., repents, turns away from, moves in a new direction), that man will obtain mercy and be blessed.

If we recoil back, being more content in the comfort of our shadows, if we are convinced that we are strong enough, smart enough, and tough enough to go through this life on our own, we will reap the harvest of that isolation. We will not prosper, and we will not mature into the men of integrity that God is calling us to become.

COT: Butterknife brought us a word last week on forgiveness and I wanted to build on that some today as well. The model prayer that Jesus gives is very familiar to many. Do we ever just glaze over something that we read and not grasp the details? YHC is guilty for sure! I want to call a particular detail to your attention in this prayer.
‭‭Matthew 6:7 NASB1995‬‬
[7] “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words.
[9] “Pray, then, in this way: ‘Our Father who is in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. [10] Your kingdom come. Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. [11] Give us this day our daily bread. [12] And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. [13] And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil. [For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’] [14] For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. [15] But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.”
In verse 12, Jesus tells us to pray to God to “…forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” What are our debts and who are our debtors? Jesus provides the answer in verses 14 and 15. They are our transgressions and those who sin against us, respectively. There is also a tiny little qualifying word in there too: if. Jesus is telling us that if we withhold forgiveness from others, God will do the same thing to us.
