Raise your hand if you have ever been Rick Rolled?  That’s when you hear Rick Astley singing his 1980’s hit – Never Gonna Give You Up after trustingly clicking a link from a friend or perhaps enemy. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KcsJwPzPxE) Jokes aside, I heard this song playing on the radio and it reminded of God’s promise.

Romans 8:35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 Just as it is written,

“For Your sake we are being put to death all day long;

We were considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

People, friends, partners, spouses let us down but our Savior does not, has not and will not. I hope the next time you get Rick Rolled, you will think of the one who will truly never let you down or hurt you.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

We are considering the concept of Family Discipleship this week. Kickflip talked about the power of moments and discipling around milestones in your children’s lives. I was given the less sexy topic of consistent intentionality which goes something like

Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6

What is the opposite? If you don’t train your child, you do not know the path he will take.

How many generations is any family, my family, your family from faithlessness? One

Judges 2:7-12 (abbreviated by Commission) The people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who survived Joshua, who had seen all the great work of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 8 Then Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died. 10 All that generation also were gathered to their fathers; and there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord, nor yet the work which He had done for Israel.

11 Then the sons of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord and served other gods, 12 and they forsook the Lord, the God of their fathers.

This is near and dear to my heart. My parents are first generation Christians. I grew up in a moral household but not a spiritual household. My parents talked about right and wrong but never studied the Bible with me, never quoted the Bible to me. When I went to college, I had my conscience as a guide and it didn’t turn out well for me – Bad company corrupted good morals. They weren’t intentional with my faith so I wasn’t intentional with my faith.

If you want your son to be a baseball player, you throw the ball with him. If you want your daughter to be a soccer player, you kick the ball with her. If you want your kid to get good grades, you do homework with them. Intentional actions with intentional outcomes.

Take them to church, but know that that is not enough. Take them to youth group but don’t rely on the youth minister to make them a believer. If you want your child to be a Christian, you open the Bible with them. If you aren’t a strong teacher yet, share thoughts from a devotional. As you mature, begin to give specific lessons or work your way through a book of the Bible explaining to your kids who God is and what he expects from us.

Intentional actions have intentional outcomes.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

I hope you are had a good workout. [Use hand to show my modest level of hope]

I hope I have pizza for dinner. [Use hand to show my low level of hope]

I am sure many of you hope UT wins a national championship  [Use hand to show a high level of hope]

I hope that Jesus is the son of God, that his life was pure, perfect and sinless, that his death atoned for my sins, that he overcame death in his resurrection and that he is seated at the right hand of God while his spirit fills my heart and walks with me daily. [Use hand to show my highest level of hope]

Romans 8:18 For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. 19 For the anxious longing of the creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God. 20 For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it, in hope 21 that the creation itself also will be set free from its slavery to corruption into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 22 For we know that the whole creation groans and suffers the pains of childbirth together until now. 23 And not only this, but also we ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our body. 24 For in hope we have been saved, but hope that is seen is not hope; for who hopes for what he already sees? 25 But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Are your resources of time, money and thought focused on this hope or have you placed your hope elsewhere?

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Rivers do not drink their own water; trees do not eat their own fruit; the sun does not shine on itself and flowers do not spread their fragrance for themselves. Living for others is a rule of nature. We are all born to help each other. – Author Unknown

For those of you who don’t know, I taught here in Knoxville for 5 years. My former students are now all in their mid to early 20’s and that air of invincibility is wearing off. I don’t have all the answers to their questions but more than anything, it means the world to those guys that I care enough to reach out and listen, offer what advice I can or even just grab a meal with them. More often than not though, I do know what they are going through and I do know what to suggest to them because it is the same stuff I went through and I give them the same answers that Dillard Harwell, John Austin Smith and Sandy Crow gave to me when I was their age. Those were my mentors and all three of them are now dead.

Most of us are overdue on bringing someone alongside. Don’t overthink it. Two of my three mentors started everything off with food. One to the Sizzler and the other to his house for a meal. It can be as easy as bringing someone along with you to something you already do. Sketchy goes to church with me and lives just down the street. I get 10 minutes with him on the way here and 10 minutes on the way home with him. If my fat self comes here three times a week, that’s an hour I have to chat with this young man on a drive that I was going to make anyways. And do you know what the best part of it all is…guess who is being a good example to my three sons and bringing them along with him on things he was going to do…Sketchy.

Good ideas are like food, they have expiration dates. They spoil if you don’t use them. Just as you thanked a mentor on Monday, do some mentoring today. If counsel, give counsel. If time, give time. You’ve got to eat today; don’t do it alone. We become all things to all men so that we might save some. (1 Cor 9:22)

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Romans 12:13 – 9 Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil; cling to what is good. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;1 1 not lagging behind in diligence, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord; 12 rejoicing in hope, persevering in tribulation, devoted to prayer, 13 contributing to the needs of the saints, practicing hospitality.

Hospitality comes from philoxensos, love of strangers. Biblically, it is so important that Paul says men who are to be elders need to practice it (1 Tim 3, Titus 1). When deciding which widows the church was to take care of, a history of hospitality was required (1 Tim 5). Bringing those outside of our family into our homes to break bread is the key to building relationships. It is during this time that we get to know others so that we can later do all of the one another’s found in scripture such as encourage, forgive and admonish and have them done to us.
