Have you guys ever fasted?  The act of withholding food (and sometimes water) for an intentional predetermined period of time?

I recently had someone provide some great insight about his experiences with fasting and I’ll be honest….I had never done it before.

The Purpose of Fasting

1. Natural reaction to grief over the loss of a loved one (David)

2. More often, fasting was done to purposely “afflict the soul (Leviticus 23:26-32)” or chasten the soul (Ps 69:10)”

3. The purpose of such affliction was to “humble” the soul (Ps 35:13), and not for any affect it might have on the body (i.e., dieting should not be the primary driver for a fast to the Lord).

4. Evidently, they felt that by so humbling themselves they would more likely incur God’s favor–Ezra 8:21-23 (Is 57:15; 66:1-2)

a. It seemed to work!  Think of Jonah, Ahab (1 Kings), Nehemiah

5. Because of the seeking of God’s favor, fasting would almost always be accompanied with prayer

The last one is where I decided to focus recently.  I took a day and decided to spend some time in prayer and focus about a couple of topics that have been hanging over me or pulling at my heart.

I want to encourage you guys to look at your heart or think about a topic that may be something you could benefit from spending some time in prayer or internal focus by fasting.

MOLESKIN:

Prayers lifted for those who have family members and friends who have passed or are sick along with words for everyone to reflect on “Susie” who is truly struggling to make ends meat and how we should be humbled and look for opportunities to help others.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

I’m not sure of how many of you are car guys but you may have heard of the 80/20 rule. 80% of the speed you get out of the car is achieved by approximately 20% of the work from the engine. On the flip-side the last 20% of the vehicles max speed is only accomplished due to the other 80% of the work from the engine.

Obviously these are not exact numbers as cars vary in performance and the cross between the efficiency curves are not exact, but it’s an analogy to understand the work needed to achieve a maximum potential.

Now think of how you go through your daily activities and how you may live in a comfort zone. Are you living off of that 20% or maybe 50% in a comfort zone like cruise control.  There are probably several things that you do that could be considered a part of your comfort zone. The things you do well you naturally focus on because again they are familiar.

What about the difficult aspects? How often do you focus or work in those?

I don’t expect you to immediately take on some drastic amount of extra workh, but what’s one thing that you know in the back of your mind you can undertake to better yourself, your family or your discipleship. I encourage you all to step out of that comfort zone and do the hard work.  Push yourself to be better or take on a role that you know you should.

This doesn’t only apply to doing more…Maybe this also means you need to stop doing something that comforts you. Something that you need to abstain from. Do it!

Philippians 4:13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

MOLESKIN:
We all have room for improvement.  Push yourself to make the difficult change.

Selfishness

It’s easy to go through your day to day activities and only think about the things you need to do or that make you happy.  When was the last time you offered to help someone or made some sort of random act that benefitted only someone else?

One of the foundational aspects of being a man is demonstrating unselfish activities for others or within your family to your wife and kids.

We’ve all probably heard the verses (Luke chapter 10 for example) about loving your neighbor as yourself, but do you ever act on that?

Don’t forget to help others or do something that may seem small that might specifically set someone’s day off on a positive trajectory

Not only are you helping others by the actions that you’ll take, but as an example…you may change the way they start the day by having a simple cup of coffee ready for them when they wake up…but you’re also setting an example for you kids or someone else that may watch you go about of other way to be unselfish.

I challenge everyone to think of something…maybe we should start small and say pick out one thing that is selfish that you do and work on that. Focus on changing that in the next….week, month, year depending on how big of an aspect you decide on

Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves.

Habakkuk

Chapter 1
Versus 3-5
“Must I forever see these evil deeds? Why must I watch all this misery? Wherever I look, I see destruction and violence. I am surrounded by people who love to argue and fight.”
‭‭ “The law has become paralyzed, and there is no justice in the courts. The wicked far outnumber the righteous, so that justice has become perverted.”
‭‭ “The Lord replied, “Look around at the nations; look and be amazed! For I am doing something in your own day, something you wouldn’t believe even if someone told you about it.”
‭‭
We can easily feel like everything around us is chaos and have anxiety or stress about how to overcome it. This can be true for many aspects of our lives but remember as God told the prophet Habakkuk in a vision that he’s working plans that you could even fathom if he told you about them.
Try not to get overwhelmed with the aspects of life that you cannot control and focus on bettering yourself and the ones around you…there’s only one way to eat an elephant, one…bite…at…a…time
