CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

We have a lot to celebrate this time of year, but for some men, it’s a time of loneliness, isolation, and feelings of worthlessness. Those feelings aren’t confined to the holidays obviously, but they can be heightened around this time of the year. We’ll never fully know the battles that others around us are fighting on a daily basis.

If God has put someone on your heart, just reach out to them. A quick phone call (even a text) could make someone’s day. Just hearing the words “I was thinking about you man” can make all the difference in the world. It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking about someone but not letting them know that you’re thinking about them, not reaching out, not taking any action. We have thousands of excuses for it – I’m just too busy, I’ll do it later, etc., etc., but they are all just that – excuses to justify our inaction. Let’s make it a point to actually reach out when God puts someone on our hearts this week.

COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA
11 HIM’s – no FNG’s

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

3 C’s that are in direct opposition to being the men we are called to be: Comfortability, Convenience, Complacency

I’ve found myself falling into the trap of the 3 C’s lately in terms of leading my family spiritually. Insert any excuse you want…..tired at the end of the day, in a busy season of life, work stress, etc., etc., etc. But those excuses are all just temporary circumstances, and God doesn’t call us to be governed by our circumstances. We are called to lead our families – not just when it’s comfortable or convenient. Being a HIM is about being the man that God calls us to be, regardless of our present circumstances.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

One of our pastors shared the following quote with us a couple Sundays back. The message is that we all worship something. If we’re not finding our identity in Christ, then we’re finding it somewhere else. Because of sin, we are all broken cisterns. If we find our worth in money, power, the approval of others, fame, glory, etc., we will never have enough. Those worldly idols were never meant to fill the void in our hearts caused by sin – no matter how much we have, we will always want more because our souls will never be satisfied with worldly possessions. A relationship, through faith, with our Father is the only sustainable source of life.

While David Foster Wallace (the man who coined this quote) wasn’t a Christian, his message regarding worldly idols is relevant to our daily struggles.

“In the day-to-day trenches of adult life, there is actually no such thing as atheism. There is no such thing as not worshipping. Everybody worships. The only choice we get is what to worship. And the compelling reason for choosing some sort of god or spiritual being to worship – be it Jesus Christ or Allah, Yahweh or the Wiccan Mother Goddess, or some inviolable set of ethical principles – is that pretty much anything else you worship will eat you alive. If you worship money and things, if they are where you tap real meaning in life, then you will never have enough, never feel you have enough. It’s the truth. Worship your body and beauty and sexual allure and you will always feel ugly. And when time and age start showing, you will die a million deaths before they finally grieve you. On one level, we all know this stuff already. It’s been codified as myths, proverbs, clichés, epigrams, parables; the skeleton of every great story. The whole trick is keeping the truth up front in daily consciousness. Worship power – you will feel weak and afraid, and you will need even more power over others to keep the fear at bay. Worship your intellect, being seen as smart – you will end up feeling stupid, a fraud, always on the verge of being found out. And so on.”

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

From Four Pillars of a Man’s Heart by Stu Weber:

“Any servant-king who thinks he doesn’t need help is deceiving himself. We do need help, truckloads of it. Remember, it was God who said, ‘It is not good for the man to be alone.’ But unless the burden of ultimate leadership falls on the man, then a man’s wife and even his children are not sure what role he is playing and how to support and help him. However, when the servant-king is clearly on his throne of accountability and responsibility, then those around him can better determine how to serve his need to be and function as God designed. But when he is on the throne, then off the throne, on and off, leading and then not leading, it becomes almost impossible for those around him to know how to help him.”
