CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.

— Eph 6:12

This life is full of conflict, war, disease, this workout, and many many terrible things. Let’s not get confused about who the enemy is. Not humans or even this broken world but against spiritual forces of evil who seek to do eternal damage.

Jesus reminds us that in this world we will have trouble. But take heart; he has overcome the world. (John 16:33) Look to Jesus for our peace and heaven for our rest.

Heb 10:24
And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.

My pastor was talking about this passage recently and thought I’d share some encouragement.

We’re all pretty good at encouraging each other to work out. That’s why we’re out this morning putting in some good work. But don’t forget other aspects of life. Family, Church, finances, work, etc. Consider how to encourage each other in these areas.

I encourage everyone to make a plan, consider their friends and family, and how they can stir each other up.

Isaiah 44:1-8

Isaiah 44:6

Thus says the Lord, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the Lord of hosts:

I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god.

Excerpt from New Morning Mercies:

If God is in control of every aspect of your world and his grace covers all your sin, why would you ever give way to fear?

  • Paul David Tripp; New Morning Mercies

The reason we might is we forget the sovereignty of God. We forget He is in control. When we focus on the world around us, it becomes really big and God becomes small. The problems around us overwhelm us.
Today be reminded of who God is, that he’s in control and if we’re in him, he’s covered all our sin.

We have no reason to fear, besides Him these is no god.

Mental Reset

The mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.

  • Romans 8:6

Romans 8:6 tells us our mind can be set on the world and death or on the Spirit and life. Often we need a mental reset or to clear our mind from what it’s set on and get it set back on good things.

How can we do this? Our mind is made to think and be engaged. It doesn’t really work to just be unset but we have to set our thoughts on something good and replace worldly thoughts. There are many ways to do this but here are 2 things I’ve found helpful.

  • Scripture – reading or reciting scripture can be a great tool. Write helpful or challenging verses on index cards. Have a regular devotional. Read blogs and sermons that encourage or instruct.
  • Prayer – a theme of the month at Juco has been prayer. Praying is a great way to focus on others and on the Spirit. Pray for the worries challenges and temptations of life.

It’s easy to get focused on worry, temptations and distractions. Don’t get set on these but replace them by setting your mind on things of the Spirit.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Matthew 11:28-30 ESV
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

This is maybe the only place in scripture where Jesus reveals his heart. What he is all about at his core. What does he choose to share to his disciples?

Gentle – He is not harsh or demanding. Not requiring perfection but welcoming, inviting and gentle. He wants us to come to him.

Lowly – He does not share about his holiness, power, perfection, omnipotence. He doesn’t want us to see he is exalted, dignified, austere, proud. He is accessible and near us. Not far off or removed. He is lowly.

This is encouraging to me because I must come back to Jesus again and again. After failures, after rebellion or just wandering off. He is always ready for us to turn back to him. Always inviting and welcoming.

This is challenging to me because it’s not how I treat others so many times. I’m not gentle but harsh or short tempered and impatient.

To be better we must continually turn back to Jesus.

“Come to me, … and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart”
–  Jesus
