CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Here is what ChatGPT4 has to say about Consistency. (not as good as what I said)

“Consistency refers to the quality of being uniform, stable, or constant in something over time. In various contexts, consistency can have different meanings:

  1. Behavior or habits: Consistency in behavior or habits means maintaining regular patterns, routines, or actions. For example, consistent exercise or consistent work performance demonstrate stability and reliability.
  2. Thoughts and beliefs: Consistency in thoughts and beliefs refers to having a coherent and logical set of ideas or values that do not frequently change or contradict each other.
  3. Quality or performance: Consistency in quality or performance means maintaining a specific standard or level of output over time, without significant fluctuations or variations. For instance, a product’s consistent quality ensures that customers receive the same experience every time they use it.

In general, consistency is often considered a desirable trait, as it demonstrates reliability, dependability, and predictability. It can build trust, enhance relationships, and contribute to personal and professional success.”

Expectations – Luke 10:38-42

I came into this week with a lot of expectations, spoken and unspoken. I would imagine that you did as well. And to be honest, it’s been a really tough week when it comes to my expectations. Expectations professionally, personally, and relationally. I think one of the best stories on expectations in the Bible comes from Luke 10:38-42, the story of Martha and Mary. I’ve included it below.

What you see in this passage of scripture is a lot of what we go through in life: missed expectations, met expectations, exceeded expectations, and how we respond to these. In this story you see three responses (based upon expectations)

  1. Martha’s response
    1. Lord don’t you care?
    2. Don’t you see me?
    3. Don’t you see all this work I’m doing to prepare for you and others?
    4. Tell her (Mary) to help me. She should be helping me! (I have expectations for her, don’t you see that?)
  2. Mary’s response
    1. Sitting at the feet of Jesus, taking in every word He said
  3. Jesus’s response
    1. I see you. I care deeply about you. I care about your expectations.
    2. I also care about Mary sitting at my feet desiring to abide in my as I abide in her.

Marha is not wrong for completing tasks, working, and preparing, and Mary is not lazy for sitting at the feet of Jesus.

Did you know you can have expectations of yourself, of others, and of Jesus. Whether you realize it or not.

A couple of questions to think about

  1. Where does this story find you right now, in your season of life?
  2. Where do you find yourself in this story?
  3. What expectations do you have of yourself, others, and Jesus?

Regardless of what your expectations are, and how you respond, Jesus wants to be invited in and wants to meet you right there – in your missed, met, or exceeded expectations.

Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.” As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home. But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details!

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

When committing to a discipline or stopping a habit, one is likely to meet one of two characters; the tyrant or the victim. Often one will quickly morph into the other at the drop of a hat. They live in your head. The tyrant will cause one to overcommit for a period of time until failure, then completely berate you with guilt, and cause you to completely give up. The victim (often will take over at this point) and baby you to the point that you don’t think you can even live up to said commitment. But it’s ok because you’re special and it loves you no matter how much of a sadclown you become.

How does one find balance between the two? How much grace should one give themselves in the face of failure? How much discipline should one enforce without becoming a tyrant?

Marcus Aurelius in his Meditations said the following…

“When force of circumstance upsets your equanimity (composure/balance), lose no time in recovering your self-control, and do not remain out of tune longer than you can help. Habitual recurrence to the harmony will increase your mastery of it.”

Brian Johnson calls this the “Equanimity Game”. How can you recover your self-control as fast as you can?
Great men aren’t flawless. They just recover faster than you can even see it.

YHC learned as an FNG that when standing on one foot stretching your quads, you can’t be looking all over the place. One must focus on a central point out in front of you. The same is true in this sense. Finding balance is about focusing on a central point and to be grounded to it.

As Christian men, our central point is this…
Romans 8:1 – “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

1 John 1:9 – “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

Jesus wasted no time in reinstating Peter. John 21:15-ff reads…

When they had finished eating, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon son of John, do you love me more than these?”  “Yes, Lord,” he said, “you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my lambs.”
16 Again Jesus said, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”He answered, “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Take care of my sheep.”
17 The third time he said to him, “Simon son of John, do you love me?”Peter was hurt because Jesus asked him the third time, “Do you love me?” He said, “Lord, you know all things; you know that I love you.” Jesus said, “Feed my sheep.
18 Very truly I tell you, when you were younger you dressed yourself and went where you wanted; but when you are old you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will dress you and lead you where you do not want to go.”
19 Jesus said this to indicate the kind of death by which Peter would glorify God. Then he said to him, “Follow me!”

Don’t become a tyrant to yourself.
Don’t give in to the bullying and become your own victim.

Receive the grace. Receive the discipline. Recover quickly and move forward.

Welcome FNG, Half Life
CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Out here, with Cinderblocks we know that how we hold a weight changes how hard it is.
That’s true about your head too. Your posture matters. The more you look down, the more weight of your head presses on your spine.
It’s called “Text Neck” and your 12 pound head can put 60 lbs of force on your cervical spine if you are looking down at your cell phone hours on end.
The same is true spiritually. The weight of the the things we are trying to carry on our own gets heavier than if we would just look up.

Psalm 123:1
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

Would we give up the convenience of our cell phone. And Look up – see the people around us hungry for conversation or a friend?
But it’s not about the phone. Would you look up from work, from your own ambition to see the needs of your family?
Can I take it one step further – Can you look up from your own emotions and do what you know you need to do?
(for the record, I’m not saying I know what that is, but deep down, I bet you do)
Turn your gaze to Jesus and do what you know you need to do. Worship, serve, Get to Church, get connected.

Remember, if you don’t look up the weight of your current circumstances you will feel more than the full weight of those things.
If you are carrying heavy weights, know: The chapter of your life that you are in, is not the whole story.
What are your conversations about? What is on the pedestal? What you talk about is where your heart is.
If you have found your hope in God – in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross, talk about Him. Increasingly.
Do that at home. Do that here. If you have not, assess the things in your life and figure out what is on the throne and what should be on that throne.

With that said, what can we lift up to God in prayer now?
I challenge you to look up during this prayer.

COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA
CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

The prospect of being tested doesn’t usually make me excited. Thanks, I expect, to our public education culture, most of us associate testing primarily with being judged, usually based on a comparatively short and only vaguely representative sample of our performance. Too often, it seems that the circumstances of the test have more to do with the outcome than our preparation.

Consequently, most of us avoid tests when we can. Our experience says that we get better outcomes when we rely on more controlled vehicles like 1001 take home worksheets. We don’t like the risk if failing. But I am here to tell you that this perspective is a wound and scar that is crippling your growth, and it’s time to start stretching it out.

This model of testing is shallow and unhelpful. Perhaps unsurprisingly, I think the model presented by the bible provides insight. In the preblast, I quoted Psalm 66 v. 10 “For you, God, tested us; you refined us like silver.” Here and in many places, “test” is the Hebrew word is Tsaraph, which is directly related to the process by which impurities are removed from silver or gold, what we would call smelting. Through heat and pressure, the precious metal is separated from the dross and purified. So while evaluation is one aspect of testing, by its nature, it is also a means of purification. It is through repeated testing that gold becomes pure, and likewise, it is through repeated testing that we grow, develop, and become stronger. And, in truth, we want to be tested. From our youth, we seek out challenges. Easy is boring. It’s only under the weight of time with nagging fear and doubt that this inclination gets slowly crushed out of us.

Tsaraph – 1) to refine, try, smelt, test 2) to find out who is qualified for battle, as with Gideon in Judges 7:4 3) to smith, as in shaping metal (Jer 6:29-30, Is 40:19) 4) to refine by means of suffering (Ps 66:10-12)

Is 1:25 – “And I will turn my hand upon thee, and purely purge away thy dross, and take away all thy tin.”

Zec 13:9 – “And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The LORD is my God.”

Mal 3:2-3 – “But who may abide the day of his coming? And who shall stand when he appeareth? For he is like a refiner’s fire, and like fuller’s soap: and he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto The LORD an offering in righteousness.”

Finally, I want to show how this directly connects to the F3 leadership process, Q4.5, here is an excerpt:

So where does Failure fit into the Leadership development equation? What does it add to a man’s Leadership Foundation? If he already knows what a Virtuous Leader does and is–and is able is able to do and be those things himself–why must a Leader also Fail?

The reason is that Failure is a crucible. It is the forge by which a Leader is purified through the burning away of his me-first self-regarding nature. It matures him. Without Failure (and lots of it), a Leader will retain too much of who he was and keep doing what he did, rather than being fully transformed into what a Virtuous Leader is and consistently do what a Virtuous Leader does.

MOLESKIN:
We were late getting back. In September (ouch…) probably gonna need to get right over to the recruiting center and warm up on the way.
