Suicide Ladder down parking lot (approx length of basketball court)

Perform 5 Bobby Hurley’s on one end and 5 Merkins on the other end of the parking lot. Increase your count by 5 for each round completed until the last round consist of 40 Bobby Hurley’s and 40 Merkins.  Congratulations! You just scored 360 points!

Basketball Circuit

Four stations of exercises were set up and HIMs paired up for some battle buddy action. At each station one HIM performed the exercise while the other ran “skill drills” down the parking lot lines. Stations were:

  • Free Throws (20lbs wall balls)
  • I’m Open! (50lbs sandbag curls)
  • Defense! (20lbs sandbag tricep extensions)
  • Granny Shots (40lbs sandbag kettlebell swings)

After the circuit was finished we passed the coupons in a ring of fire both standing and sitting. (Sitting yielded a much better workout.)

To top off the workout we ran sprints down the parking lot and bernie’d back for four rounds.

Romans 8:28 New International Version (NIV)

28 And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

This is one of my favorite verses. However, I think it is often taken out of context. We are not promised an easy life on this Earth. Bad things can happen to good people, but this verse tells us that those things will be used by God to bring us closer to Him and ultimately closer to salvation. We also need to use this thought to help us keep our perspective in this world. Don’t allow trivial things to cloud your view of God. Keep looking upward.

I had nothing. Drifter stepped up and provided us with a nice Easter message from his recent study of Matthew. He spoke about certain flower up north that blooms early but is subsequently covered in snow. An allegory of Christ dying but leaving us with the hope of a new “spring” yet to come.
MOLESKIN:
I had a way worse routine planned. I’m thankful the blocks were returned so we could do my original idea. That bad one will probably be saved for the Burbs. I don’t want anyone to quit the Bomb Shelter…

David vs Goliath story shared from I Samuel 17. David selected 5 smooth stones to kill the Philistine. God places stones/things in our life to fight with. David May seem brash and cocky but he recalls God’s faithfulness in the past and claims this for future success.

1 Corinthians 9:19-23

In this passage Paul talks about becoming all things to all people in order to share the gospel.  I think this is pertinent today.  The message of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection never changes – we should never water this down or sanitize it.  Lost people need to hear the truth.  We do, however, need to communicate with people in a way that they understand this message.  The next time you feel led to share Christ with someone, consider who you are talking to.  Are they older than you?  Younger?  Do they have the same interests as you?  What religious background do they come from?   Consider all of these things to help you communicate as clearly as possible so that they will comprehend what you are telling them.

MOLESKIN:
I almost fartsacked this morning.  I woke up at 5:12.  Evidently I hit snooze on my phone alarm and fell back asleep with it in my hand….then when the snooze alarm went off I dropped the phone, which woke me up.  Nothing like waking up late on a day when you’re on Q!

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Leadership Shamrock .  I read an article in the Harvard Business Review recently about Leadership.  Creating Trust is a critical component of being a leader. The level of trust is the #1 factor for how people rate the effectiveness of a leader.  How can you follow or take direction from someone you can’t trust?  A huge study was performed that looked at data from 360 assessments of 87,000 leaders. The objective was to identify “clusters” of traits that are most often the foundation of trust.  The researchers performed correlations and factor analysis statistical tests on the data to “group” the characteristics that most strongly influence the level of trust in a leader.  There were three primary factors (kind of a “Leadership Shamrock” that can be used to reinforce trust principles similar to how St. Patrick used the shamrock to describe the Holy Trinity) that were commonly grouped as most important for engendering trust among others.

  1. POSITIVE RELATIONSHIPS
  • Stays in touch on the issues and concerns of others.
  • Balances results with concern for others.
  • Generates cooperation between others.
  • Resolves conflict with others.
  • Gives honest feedback in a helpful way.
  1. GOOD JUDGMENT/EXPERTISE (how well informed and knowledgeable you are)
  • They use good judgement when making decisions.
  • Others trust their ideas and opinions.
  • Others seek after their opinions.
  • Their knowledge and expertise make an important contribution to achieving results.
  • Can anticipate and respond quickly to problems.
  1. CONSISTENCY (do they walk their talk and do what they say they will do)
  • Are a role model and set a good example.
  • Honor commitments and keep promises.
  • Follow through on commitments.
  • Are willing to go above and beyond what needs to be done.

Additional take-home messages of the study:

  • You don’t have to be outstanding at all these to be an effective leader, just strong/above average. Being below average in any can destroy trust.
  • RELATIONSHIPS the most important of the three.  Perhaps people understand that leaders can’t know EVERYTHING, and that some inconsistency is to be expected.  But once Positive Relationships are damaged, every other aspect of trust suffers.
  • Think about which of these three you are weakest at, and then work to improve that area.
