COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
A couple days ago one of my students mentioned learning about cascading failure, meaning one unchecked problem leads to another, which leads to another, and so on. He said he feels like he sees that happen in his own life. My initial response was to point out that that doesn’t necessarily apply to us, since we aren’t machines and not all aspects of our lives are related to one another. But then I realized that I’m currently allowing myself to experience cascading failure. I’ve been having some serious pain in my stomach, which led to me not working out for a month, which led to me not getting up early, which led to me not going to bed early, which led to me wasting time on things like TV at night instead of reading and getting good rest, which has also led to me eating less healthy, which all of this has led to me being more irritable towards others and to spending less time in the Word. Taking time off from exercise to recover is fine, but it doesn’t mean I have to give up getting up early and eating well and getting good rest. So I encouraged the guys not to allow what Paul calls “a thorn in our sides” to become a cascading failure

THA-THANG:
At each location we did 4 rounds of one different exercise for 1 minute each followed by another exercise. I.E. 1 minute of burpees followed by a run up the stairs

  • Sunsphere: Burpees, Merkins, Cobras, Carolina Dry Docks; each followed by a run up and down the stairs
  • Bridge over Cumberland: Squat Jumps, Smurf Jacks, Sumo Squats, Side Lunges; each followed by bear crawls across the bridge and a walk back to the starting point
  • Amphitheater: BBS, Flutterkicks, American Hammers, Jane Fondaes; each followed by crabwalks across the stage and a walk back to the starting point
  • Then we rinsed and repeated all the above, except we did it at the sunsphere and fountains and did 30 seconds of each exercise instead of 1 minute

COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA
CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Shared a bit about the Sabbath as a spiritual discipline. Typically when I think of the Sabbath I think of how Jesus said that man was not made for the Sabbath, but that the Sabbath was made for man. I think we did to use this as a reason to not engage with the topic of Sabbath rest, saying that Jesus said we didn’t have to do it, which is true that He didn’t command it, but I think Jesus said this not to discredit the Sabbath but to point out its purpose. It was made specifically for man, meaning it is worth while and beneficial to us. The Sabbath is not only one of the Ten Commandments but is also the most elaborately described of the Ten Commandments. I also encouraged us to prioritize our rest and not to wait until we felt burnt out to stop, since waiting until the point of failure to stop and rest typically leads to unfruitful rest

THA-THANG:
This workout was done with a basketball. Everywhere we went we ran Indian Runs, passing the ball to the person behind us and when the ball made it to the back of the line whoever had it would run to the run and start passing it back again. If the ball touched the ground at anytime, even during exercise, we all had to stop and do 5 burpees

  • Amphitheater: 2 laps of snaking the stairs. 1st lap we did 10 Big Boy Sit ups at the bottom of each staircase and 10 Merkins at the top. 2nd lap we did 10 Dips at the bottom and 10 Sumo Squats at the top
  • Min Kao Bridge: We lunged across the bridge, stopping 3 times to do 15 Carolina Dry Docks each time
  • Bottom of the Hill: 25 Incline Merkins, 25 Little Baby Crunches, 25 Squats and run up the steps to Ayers
  • Outside Ayers: We made a big circle on our 6’s and passed the ball around. Each time someone caught the ball they had to lead everyone in 5 reps of an exercise. We did 2 rounds and you couldn’t pass to the people next to you or the person who just passed to you and went until everyone had caught the ball. 1st round was American Hammers and 2nd round was Flutterkicks
  • Student Union Bridge: We played Bearcrawl Ball. We formed 2 teams and essentially played soccer with our hands while bearcrawling
  • Long Mosey back to AO

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
During this time of year we often take time to think about things we want to improve on, do more of, become better at, or start doing all together. I encouraged us to also consider where in our lives we can dial back, spend less time, less energy, or less money, in order to make room for the things we value or to just make more room in our schedules in general. Last night I read that the average audio book collection of the entire Bible clocks in at 71 hours, which is also less time than the average American spends in one month watching TV. So what are somethings, like TV, phone, social media, etc. that we could be spending less time on in order to make room for the things we value most?

Pretty simple routine today, I know it’s probably done at every AO including Big Ball, but I hadn’t seen it come up in a bit so I decided it was time for the Marine Corps Short Card.  We moseyed out of the fountain area and over to the Big Ball.  Perform an exercise for the indicated number of reps, then sprint the stairs at BB to the top and back down before moving on to the next exercise.  I did not deviate from the prescribed exercises:

  • 30 merkins
  • 30 squats
  • 30 crunches (4 count)
  • 10 burpees
  • 10 windmills
  • 30 merkins
  • 30 mountain climbers (4 count)
  • 30 flutter kicks (4 count)
  • 10 burpees
  • 10 cherry pickers
  • 30 merkins
  • 30 star jumps
  • 30 supermans
  • 10 burpees
  • 10 chain breakers
  • 30 merkins
  • 30 lunges
  • 30 hello Dolly’s (4 count)
  • 10 burpees
  • 10 trunk twists
  • 3 sets of max dead hang pull ups, 10 second break in between each set

About halfway through the list, I called an audible and eliminated the stair runs in between exercises to allow everyone the chance to complete.  Those that finished earlier moved to the side and knocked out ab exercises, people joined in as they completed the short card:

Oblique crunches led by Butterfly
Flutter kicks
V Ups led by Ariel
American hammers
Heels to heaven
Boat/canoe

“It is not work that kills men, it is worry.  Work is healthy; you can hardly put more on a man than he can bear.  But worry is rust on the blade.  It is not movement that destroys machinery, but friction.”  –

Like usual, what I share is something that I need to hear and listen to more than I’m providing for anyone else.  I just hope that I can listen and that it can help anyone else needing to hear it.  I make things worse nearly always by worrying, worrying before I can even do anything about it.  Worry does nothing to improve a situation.  The best thing I can do is turn worry into action, find something to work on.  If I can actually work on the problem at hand, it rarely is as bad as I worried about it being.  If I can’t yet work towards that, I need to find something else to occupy and improve until the time comes.
