SSH x20, Windmills x10, Tempo Squats x10, Grady Corns x15, little bit of this and little bit of that.  Also did a warm-up mosey around the track.

THA-THANG:

5-minute complex:

  • 1st minute — reverse lunges
  • 2nd minute — reverse lunges + squats
  • 3rd minute — reverse lunges + squats + inch-worms
  • 4th minute — reverse lunges + squats + inch-worms + merkin
  • 5th minute — reverse lunges + squats + inch-worms + merkin + shoulder taps

Around and around.  Did 6 rounds adding an exercise each time.  In between rounds, we worked on sprints on the soccer field increasing our speed each time til 100% sprint after 6th round.

  • Round 1 — 10 burpees
  • Round 2 — 10 burpees + 10 iron mikes
  • Round 3 — 10 burpees + 10 iron mikes + 10 jump-knee-tucks

Took a mosey around the track doing some dips along the way.  Stopped at the small basketball court for a merkin ring-of-fire.

Actor Carey Grant was born this day in 1904.  Actor Kevin Costner was born this day in 1955.  Hockey player Mark Messier was born this day in 1961.  Eagle Glenn Frey died this day in 2016.  But, this day is not about any of them.  Today, January 18th falls on the third Monday in January, which is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

Today is the 35th national observance of MLK Day.

In 1983, President Reagan signed a bill that would establish a nationally-observed holiday in honor of MLK.  He is the only non-president to have received that honor.  He is also the only non-president with a memorial located on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

Mosey to the Flag Pole

There is no better place to celebrate MLK Day than the Equalizer at Carl Cowan Park.  Cowan was a local MLK, so to speak, who did a lot for equality and race relations in Knox County.  In 1953, Cowan became the first African-American to serve as an Assistant District Attorney in Knox County.

This has nothing to do with MLK or Cowan, but today we are playing Ghost-Man Baseball.  No one had ever played it before because I just made it up. Here’s how it works (hopefully):

Home plate = the flag pole

First base = point in the diamond around the loop just beyond the playground

Second base = top of the diamond around the loop just beyond the tennis courts

Third base = point of the diamond around the loop in stinky corner

Divide into two teams

Team 1 runs to first base, does the exercises there and returns home.  Team 2 does core exercises at home plate while Team 1 is gone.  Team 1 comes back to home plate and does the core exercises while Team 2 runs to first base, does the exercises there, and returns to home plate.  Team 1 then runs to second base, stopping at first base to do the exercises there before moving on to second base (because you have to touch the bag before advancing), does the exercises at second, and returns to home plate via first base (but not doing the first base exercises again on the way back).  Team 2 is doing the core exercises at home plate and switches with Team 1 again.  Repeat this process until each team has hit a single, a double, a triple, and finally a home run, i.e., ran all of the way around the bases to home plate (stopping at each base along the way and doing the exercises) and finishing with home run exercises at home plate (no sweeping back because it’s a home run).  After the home run exercises, Team 1 does the core exercises at home plate while waiting for Team 2 to complete its home run trot and exercises.

As mentioned, today is the 35th observance of MLK Day.  Also, MLK received a Nobel Peace Prize when he was 35 years of age.  At the time, he was the youngest person to receive the award.  Therefore, the reps at each stop, including the home run, are 35.

Home plate core exercises (while the other team is running the bases) are the team’s choice of core exercise(s) done the entire time that the other team is running.

It worked as planned, but we starting running out of time, so both teams did the home run lap together, and we only had time for 10 burpees at home plate.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

In 1957, MLK and other civil rights activists – mostly ministers – founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (“SCLC”).  The group was committed to achieving full equality for African Americans through non-violent protest.  The SCLC’s motto was: “Not one hair of one head of one person should be harmed.”  MLK was elected president of the SCLC in 1957 and served until his assassination in 1968.  During that time, MLK traveled over 6,000,000 miles, spoke over 2,500 times, and wrote 5 books.

MLK was assassinated on April 4, 1968.  The night before his assassination, MLK gave a speech at a church in Memphis and seemed to foreshadow his death:

“Like anybody, I would like to live a long life.  Longevity has its place.  But I’m not concerned about that now. . . .  I’ve seen the Promised Land.  I may not get there with you.  But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the Promised Land.  And I’m happy tonight.  I’m not worried about anything.  I’m not fearing any man.  Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.”

His words were truly powerful.  Here are a few other examples:

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”

We need more leaders like MLK.

MOLESKIN:

During the workout, I shared some trivia about MLK:

MLK was born as Michael King, Jr.  His father was a Baptist minister in Atlanta.  Sr. visited Germany in 1934 and was inspired by the Protestant Reformation leader, Martin Luther.  Sr. began calling himself Martin Luther King as a result, and Sr. later referred to his son as Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK was arrested 29 times and assaulted 4 times.

MLK received 20 honorary degrees from colleges and universities in the U.S. and around the world.

In 1963, MLK became the first African American to be named Time magazine’s “Man of the Year.” 

There are approximately 900 streets named after MLK in the U.S.  Italy and Israel also have streets named after him.

On September 20, 1958, a woman stabbed MLK in the chest with a letter opener at a book signing in Harlem.  MLK nearly died, but he was saved after hours of surgery.  MLK later stated that he felt no anger or ill will towards the woman.

Luke 2:39-40 – When Jesus’ parents had fulfilled all the requirements of the law of the Lord, they returned home to Nazareth in Galilee. There the child grew up healthy and strong. He was filled with wisdom, and God’s favor was on him.

The Christmas story is incredible and powerful, but it’s not the end. Jesus lived a life that serves as an example to us. What is one aspect of Jesus’ character you wish was more a part of you? Make a plan to make Jesus’ whole story a part of your daily life & routine.

THA-THANG:
We did the workouts below with Charmin starting us off at the Coliseum.  Before we got started with his exercises, good ol Charmin got us to have a snow fight with the last man hit being the first one to get a Hot Toddy after the workout.  The last man standing was Gibbler.  Here are the workouts:

Lily’s Birthday Boy Triple Q 15 Minute Workout
To be performed at the Caribbean aka Circus Maximus.
We will go counterclockwise around the parking lot five times, using different
methods of movement which will be listed below. At each end of the parking lot
we will be doing reps of exercises which are also listed below. I will have
instructions posted on both ends of the parking lot so that people won’t have to
remember all of this.
West End
1. 20 Squat Jumps. Sprint to East End.
2. 20 Big Boy Sit-ups. High Knees to East End.
3. 15 Shoulder Taps (both shoulders = 1). Skip to East End.
4. 20 Carolina Dry Docks. Karaoke Right to East End.
5. 20 Bicycle Kicks (4 ct). Bernie to East End.
East End
1. 20 Merkins. Bernie to West End.
2. 20 Iron Mikes (both legs = 1). Butt Kick to West End.
3. 20 Hello Dollies (4 ct). Half-speed Sprint to West End.
4. 10 Burpees. Karaoke left to West End.
5. 20 Plank Jacks. Sprint to West End.
I don’t know how long the above will take but it may be more than 15 minutes. If
so, end early and go to next post. If it take less than 15 minutes, have guys rinse
and repeat.

Charmin at the Colosseum
25s x 5 (That’s fifty reps of each exercise cause I’m 50) and 5 rounds of 25s for
each decade of my 50 years. In between each round, we run laps around the
Colosseum, with descending number of laps because each decade seems to go
that much faster.
So, 25s of merkins and big boys, run 4 laps
25s of Smurf jacks and mountain climbers, run 3 laps
25s of American Hammers and plank jacks, run 2 laps
25s of pickle pounders and monkey humpers, run 1 lap
25s of Bobby Hurleys and dips. The end. Mosey to the next station.
I haven’t actually run through this yet, so I don’ know if it can be done in 15
minutes or not. If not, I’ll shorten it, but the idea will be the same.

On one side of the parking lot you start the Ab exercise and do the stated reps.
After completing the reps you run to far side of parking lot and do the same Ab
exercise just completed until the six arrives. Once the six is in then you start the
next exercise from PT side and do the stated reps. Then run to other side of
parking lot and do the same PT exercise until six arrives. Do all five exercises.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Charmin, High-Heels and I now equal up to 169 years of living and I, Lilydipper, am the oldest of the “Respect”able crew.  It is nice to know that, no matter how old we get, we still have room for growth.  At 64 I hope to continue working out with F3 for quite some time to come.  And, no matter who leads the F3 workouts and no matter what their age, I feel I grow with each message I hear.  Yet, even when I can no longer run about, perhaps even walk about, there will be room for me to grow as an individual.  God wants us keep growing in Him throughout our lives.  Isn’t it nice to know that we always have more to learn?  I was listening to a radio station about a man who had injured his back and for quite some time was in pain, unable to walk about.  He decided to get on the internet and learn as much as he could about different subjects.  For example, he found spiders to be fascinating and found he could spend day after day learning more and more about them.  One subject, tons to learn.

Much of what we learn we must learn more than once.  Growth comes through hearing the same thing again and again until it finally plants itself within us.  Also, we must live with what we learned and apply it again and again.  I have found sermon lessons at church to be that way.  I will hear a sermon and think, “Wow, I need to hang on to this, use it in my life.”  Yet, I some how lose it, it drifts away.  Then, another sermon comes along with a similar message.  Some of it sticks with me.  After 10 to 15 similar sermons, maybe I finally get it.  Maybe by then I start applying it.  I grow for goodness sake!  That is how growth occurs.  What we learn comes through inculcation, a repeating of the lesson, until we get it through our thick skulls.

Lord, help me to keep growing no longer how old I get!!!
