CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Today we spent time on “voliltion.”  What got me thinking about it was a photo on social media that I saved a few years ago.  It was a picture of the football field with Army and Navy playing.  The caption said something about it being the only game that day where every player on that field was willing to die for me and my freedom.  I also thought of my son-in-law, Travis.  During one of his 8 tours of duty he received the Bronze Star for Valor because he chose to live by the Ranger creed to leave no man behind, put himself in harms way, and drag his wounded teammate to safety.  Sua Sponte!  I mentioned one of the last scenes of the movie, Saving Private Ryan, when Captain John Miller (a Ranger) tells Private Ryan to “earn this.”  This disappointed many Army Rangers because they believe that a Ranger would not say something like that.  Rangers don’t expect their service to be “earned”, there service is their own volition.  Sua Sponte!

We celebrated Christ this past week.  He chose to obey his Father on His own volition.  Yes, in His prayer in the garden He did ask if there was some other way to accomplish His mission but he always came back to say that He would do the will of His Father.  Jesus didn’t ask us to earn it.  He did it by choice so that our sins would be forgiven, we would be declared justified in God’s eyes, and redemption could be ours.  We don’t have to earn it.  We only need to repent, profess Christ, obey, and follow.  Not easy, but at least we know the way to everlasting joy and peace.

1 Timothy 4:7-8Have nothing to do with irreverent, silly myths.  Rather train yourself for godliness, for while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.

It is biblical that we should take care of our physical bodies and well being.  A strong body helps us to develop a strong mind.  F3 supports that aspect in the first F.  In the passage, the Apostle Paul, challenges that training in godliness of far greater value because it prepares us for the life to come, the everlasting life.  We should exercise the third F as it is of value in every way.  Holding ourselves accountable through the second F helps us progress in our third F.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
In April 2013 at just under 4 years old my great nephew, Whitt, was diagnosed with leukemia.  Using a protocol from St. Judes Hospital, he immediately began chemo treatments at a children’s hospital in Fort. Worth with maintenance administered in Midland, Texas.  A year later Julie and I visited them during a quick Texas tour to see family members.  Bald headed with a port inserted in his chest, we accompanied Whitt for one of his chemo treatments.  The chemicals were not pleasant to receive and nausea and sickness was the normal side effect.  His parents would always comment that Whitt never whimpered, never cried, never complained.  He always took it like a real trooper.  That April day in 2014 was no different.  In fact, Whitt played in a T-ball game that evening and played very well.  Whitt’s dad was on the field when a father from the other team was commenting that his son had a really tough day since he had swim practice before the ballgame.  My nephew said he could sympathize because his son had a chemo treatment earlier that day.  You could hear the crickets.

In 2016 the treatments ended and Whitt has remained cancer free.  Almost 10 now, he has become a really, really good baseball player.  Whitt has been a constant reminder to me that God does not test those who trust in Him more than one can endure.  Whitt trusted God as much as any 4 or 5 or 6 year old boy could.  He is brave and he endured.

Various fund raisers were held in the tight knit West Texas town of Midland.  I must have 8 to 10 Whitt-Man t-shirts.  Most of them have two Bible verses on the back.  The first is Deuteronomy 33:27.  The next is Psalms 113:7-8.  Check them out.  They will encourage you.

Heroes come in many shapes and sizes, genders, and ages.  Whitt will always be my hero.  He lifts my spirit.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Last time I reminisced about the last 10 years.  It was 10 years I was able to experience and Staff Sgt. Jason Dahlke was not.  He was killed in action while service in Afghanistan during 2009.  Today I want to talk about one of the major lessons I learned since that time.

I have always been “right.” Since I’m right either everyone agrees with me or they are wrong.  I got into some family trouble several years ago because of my “I’m right” attitude and it really caused some problems.  There were deep wounds and healing was not overnight.  It was a gradual process, took a lot of work, and a message to self hit me hard. Thankfully, the storm has been weathered and family relations are better than ever.

Life is not about being right all the time.  Sometimes (maybe most of the time) it doesn’t really matter.  What matters is listening to the other person(s) and picking the right battles.  It reminds me of my faith.  There are definitely essentials to the faith, but others are not. It seems to be the non-essentials that cause the problems in Christianity.  The division into denominations has mostly been the results of differences over non-essentials, the man made religion.  We should concentrate on the one place where Christians all come together – at the foot of the Cross.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
I heard a song a few days ago by the band, Ten Years After.  The song didn’t get me to thinking.  It was the groups name.  I thought back to ten years ago (2009) – give or take a few months.  Memorable in many ways.  I remembered finding my wife, Julie, on the floor, blue in color. I remembered my stroke and heart surgery and the few warning signs I had a few weeks earlier.  I remembered Staff Sgt Jason Dalhke, 1st Battalion Ranger Regiment.  He was Emily’s and Travis’ (daughter and son-in-law) best friend.  Julie and I made full recoveries.  Jason was killed in action at the age of 29 in the mountains of Afghanistan.

I have been given the gift of the last ten years, as have Julie.  Jason, for whatever reasons God has, didn’t get to experience them.

So here I was a few days ago, not thinking “why” but thinking “what.”  Not why me.  Rather, what have I done with the last 10 years.  Sure, I can remember successes, failures, mistakes, joy, … all kinds of things.  Did I earn those 10 years?  No way.  I don’t believe that’s how it works.  Rather it made me think about the things I need to learn from the past 10 or whatever number of years.  I need to take what I have learned and build on it for the future.  I challenge each of you to think about the last 10 years and to think of the personal progress made – and the personal miscues experienced.  Then think about the way you have been able to build upon the past – hopefully in a positive way.

I intend to get into some follow up BOM talks in my upcoming Q’s.  We’ll see how that goes.  Until then, remember that in many ways our future is built upon our past.  First, though, we have to learn from it.
