CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

In 1996, Coach John Scolinos was 78 years old and five years retired from a college coaching. He gave a presentation that began with a question. “Do you know how wide home plate is in Little League?”
After a pause, someone offered, “Seventeen inches?”, more of a question than answer.
“That’s right,” he said. “How about in Babe Ruth league? Any Babe Ruth coaches in the house?” Another long pause.
“Seventeen inches?” a guess from another reluctant coach.
“That’s right,” said Scolinos. “Now, how many high school coaches do we have in the room?” Hundreds of hands shot up, as the pattern began to appear. “How wide is home plate in high school.
“Seventeen inches,” they said.
“You’re right!” Scolinos barked. “And you college coaches, how wide is home plate in college?”
“Seventeen inches!” we said, in unison.
“Any Minor League coaches here? How wide is home plate in pro ball?”…………“Seventeen inches!”
“RIGHT! And in the Major Leagues, how wide home plate is in the Major Leagues?
“Seventeen inches!”
“SEV-EN-TEEN INCHES!” he confirmed, his voice bellowing off the walls. “And what do they do with a Big League pitcher who can’t throw the ball over a seventeen inch plate?” Pause. “They send him to Back to the minors. “What they don’t do is this: they don’t say, ‘Ah, that’s okay, Jimmy. If you can’t hit a seventeen-inch target? We’ll make it eighteen inches or nineteen inches. We’ll make it twenty inches so you have a better chance of hitting it. If you can’t hit that, let us know so we can make it wider still, say twenty-five inches.’”
And what do we do when your best player shows up late to practice? Do we hold him accountable? Or do we change the rules to fit him? Do we widen home plate?
This is the problem in our homes today. With our marriages, with the way we parent our kids. With our discipline.
We don’t teach accountability to our kids, and there is no consequence for failing to meet standards. We just widen the plate. “This is the problem in our schools today. The quality of our education is going downhill fast and teachers have been stripped of the tools they need to be successful, and to educate and discipline our young people. We are allowing others to widen home plate! Where is that getting us?”
“And this is the problem in the Church, where powerful people in positions of authority have taken advantage of young children, only to have such an atrocity swept under the rug for years. Our church leaders are widening home plate for themselves! And we allow it.”
“And the same is true with our government. Our so-called representatives make rules for us that don’t apply to themselves. They take bribes from lobbyists and foreign countries. They no longer serve us. And we allow them to widen home plate! We see our country falling into a dark abyss while we just watch.”
If we fail to hold ourselves to a higher standard, a standard of what we know to be right; if we fail to hold our spouses and our children to the same standards, if we are unwilling or unable to provide a consequence when they do not meet the standard; and if our schools & churches & our government fail to hold themselves accountable to those they serve, there is but one thing to look forward to …
…We have dark days ahead!.”
“Don’t widen the plate.”

There is no perfect life, no perfect job, no perfect childhood, no perfect marriage, and no perfect set of people who will always do what we expect them to do.

What we have is a perfect God who is able to lead us through this imperfect life with unfailing strength, incomparable wisdom, and infinite love.

Memorial Day Quotes (Wanted to extend our contemplation for those you paid the ultimate price for our American freedom.)

Courage is almost a contradiction in terms. It means a strong desire to live taking the form of a readiness to die.” – G.K. Chesterton

“There is nothing wrong with America that cannot be cured with what is right in America.” – Bill Clinton

“It is foolish and wrong to mourn the men who died. Rather we should thank God such men lived.” – Gen. George S. Patton

“Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it.” – Mark Twain

“But freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn’t pass it on to our children in the bloodstream. The only way they can inherit the freedom we have known is if we fight for it, protect it, defend it and then hand it to them with the well-thought lessons of how they in their lifetime must do the same. And if you and I don’t do this, then you and I may well spend our sunset years telling our children and our children’s children what it once was like in America when men were free.” – Ronald Reagan

“The soldier, above all other men, is required to practice the greatest act of religious training – sacrifice. In battle and in the face of danger and death, he discloses those divine attributes which his Maker gave when he created man in his own image. No physical courage and no brute instinct can take the place of the Divine help which alone can sustain him. However horrible the incidents of war may be, the soldier who is called upon to offer and to give his life for his country, is the noblest development of mankind.” – Douglas MacArthur

The last one is from a speech by General MacArthur given to West Point Cadets on May 12, 1962.  It was his last major speech entitled Duty, Honor, Country.  In less than two years he was dead at age 84.  If you have about 10 minutes, I strongly encourage you to read the entire speech.

Bob Dylan is one of my favorite song writers and he is one of the most prolific.  He wrote “Blowin” In The Wind” in 1962 and while most of his questions are unanswerable, there are a few that literally hit me between the eyes.  Here are the lyrics.

“Blowin’ In The Wind”
How many roads must a man walk down
Before you call him a man?
How many seas must a white dove sail
Before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes, and how many times must the cannonballs fly
Before they’re forever banned?

The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind

Yes, and how many years can a mountain exist
Before it’s washed to the sea?
Yes, and how many years can some people exist
Before they’re allowed to be free?
Yes, and how many times can a man turn his head
And pretend that he just doesn’t see?

The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind

Yes, and how many times must a man look up
Before he can see the sky?
Yes, and how many ears must one man have
Before he can hear people cry?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take ’til he knows
That too many people have died?

The answer, my friend, is blowin’ in the wind
The answer is blowin’ in the wind

Lyrics by Bob Dylan 1962/1963

My prayer is that God gives me the eyes to see, the ears to hear, and the heart to respond.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
The nations supply chain has been severely disrupted due to Covid 19.  That hasn’t gone unnoticed by a patient individual like myself.  My whole working career was spent in manufacturing so I understand the fine balance that exists in getting inventory levels right and meeting delivery targets.  I admit that not all my finest traits have shown through when an item I have ordered takes weeks to receive rather than days I have come to expect.  Recently I was taking to Nadine about an item on order for my truck from the company she works for.  I placed the order in early March and initially was told that it might take 15 to 20 days to receive.  6 weeks after order date she tells me that it will take another 6 or more weeks to receive.  My response surprised Nadine.  I had a little bit of a chuckle, told her that I understood that the entire nation is trying to climb out of a disruptive supply situation, and my light hearted response with her told her that I was not upset about it.  She stopped me in mid sentence just to tell me how much she appreciated my attitude.  Too often she is on the wrong side of a phone conversation from an angry customer.  I told her that I was sorry she had to be exposed to that kind of abuse and we ended our phone time with goodwill coming from both sides.  Actually, she made my day as she felt I had made hers.  Kindness and love isn’t required but it sure makes life more bearable.

The exchange with Nadine reminded me of a verse from 1 Peter 4:8 “Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since love covers a multitude of sins.”  Our loving God cared enough for us that He sent His Son, Jesus, and Jesus loved us enough to die for us to cover a whole lot of multitudes of sins.  The least we can do while on this earth is recognize this and pass it along in all types of way – even during short phone conversations.
