CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Revisiting the Q’s BOM from last year, it focused on getting out of my comfort zone and trusting God more.  (Phil. 4:13 and think about Paul’s level of discomfort with his mission).  Taking stock of last year, I’m disappointed in the difficulty I showed to trust God with decisions that might get me out of my comfort zone.  I need to do better.

A Visit from St. Nicholas

BY CLEMENT CLARKE MOORE

‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house

Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;

The stockings were hung by the chimney with care,

In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;

The children were nestled all snug in their beds;

While visions of sugar-plums danced in their heads;

And mamma in her ‘kerchief, and I in my cap,

Had just settled our brains for a long winter’s nap,

When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,

I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter.

Away to the window I flew like a flash,

Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.

The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow,

Gave a lustre of midday to objects below,

When what to my wondering eyes did appear,

But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny rein-deer,

With a little old driver so lively and quick,

I knew in a moment he must be St. Nick.

More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name:

“Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now Prancer and Vixen!

On, Comet! on, Cupid! on, Donner and Blitzen!

To the top of the porch! to the top of the wall!

Now dash away! dash away! dash away all!”

As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly,

When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky;

So up to the housetop the coursers they flew

With the sleigh full of toys, and St. Nicholas too—

And then, in a twinkling, I heard on the roof

The prancing and pawing of each little hoof.

As I drew in my head, and was turning around,

Down the chimney St. Nicholas came with a bound.

He was dressed all in fur, from his head to his foot,

And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot;

A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,

And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack.

His eyes—how they twinkled! his dimples, how merry!

His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!

His droll little mouth was drawn up like a bow,

And the beard on his chin was as white as the snow;

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,

And the smoke, it encircled his head like a wreath;

He had a broad face and a little round belly

That shook when he laughed, like a bowl full of jelly.

He was chubby and plump, a right jolly old elf,

And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself;

A wink of his eye and a twist of his head

Soon gave me to know I had nothing to dread;

He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work,

And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk,

And laying his finger aside of his nose,

And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose;

He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,

And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.

But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight—

“Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
What does this time of year bring to your mind?  Past gatherings with family and friends? Reminders of favorite gifts received when you were young?  The excitement you had when you saw your wife or children open a special gift you gave them?  I certainly have those memories.

There is another memory I have and it comes to me every time I hear or sing Silent Night.  Back in the late ’60s and early ’70s, Bob Hope would take a USO show to the soldiers in Vietnam.  It was his way of bringing joy to a desperate place; his way of giving back to those who were giving so much for us back home. It was about two hours of comedy, song and dance, and beautiful women for the GIs to enjoy.  And did they ever enjoy the time.  The looks on their faces told it all.

As tradition had it, Bob Hope ended each show with clips from the several locations they visited.  That clip was a montage of the singing of Silent Night.  It was hard to keep the tears from flowing – from me or from the military personnel in the audiences.  It is a scene I will never forget.

All of this reminds me of the verse in Luke that captures the feelings of Mary on that first night of Jesus as a baby.  The shepherds had appeared at the manger and told Mary and Joseph all that the angels had told them about the child.  Luke 2:19 “But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart.”

We need to do the same. We need to ponder the beauty of God’s gift of His Son.  The gift that is our only way to everlasting life with God.  And if we haven’t done a good enough job of it, we need to provide those experiences with the ones we love so they can treasure up and ponder for years to come.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

As the scripture says below, fortunately, Jesus died for us so we are forgiven for being sinners if we believe in Him and try to live a life through Him. I’m so thankful I’m forgiven for being a sinner but want to continue to strive to be a better person who lives more like Jesus each and every day.
1 Timothy 1:15-17  Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 17 Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
2 Corinthians 9:15  Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
Matthew 1:21  She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

Romans 6:23  For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
John 3:16  For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
This time of year many people around the world increase their focus on Jesus and His birth.  I was actually raised not celebrating Christmas as a religious holiday, because the Bible doesn’t provide instruction to do so.  I am sure this sounds odd to many, but we instead focused on the things the Bible does teach us throughout the year.  What if the people who increase their focus on Jesus during this time of year did the same all through the year?  What could the world be like?  I definitely appreciate all the good words that are shared during our F3 COTs.  So, how exactly can we shift our focus throughout the year?  In Galatians 5:16-23, Paul mentions the ways of the flesh (worldly) that we need to steer clear of and the fruits of the Spirit that we need to cling to.  He mentions jealousy and outbursts of anger as sins that will cause us to “not inherit the kingdom of God”. Those aren’t things I typically think of when I think of “sin”, but there it is in God’s word…plain as day.  Increasing our focus on Jesus and His sacrifice for us throughout the year will help us to live by the fruits of the Spirit and not the deeds of the flesh.
MOLESKIN:
