Shalom in the gloom…

In the book Not the Way It’s Supposed to Be: A Breviary of Sin, Christian author Cornelius Plantinga described the biblical concept of shalom:

The webbing together of God, humans, and all creation in justice, fulfillment, and delight is what the Hebrew prophets call shalom. We call it peace but it means far more than mere peace of mind or a cease-fire between enemies. In the Bible, shalom means universal flourishing, wholeness and delight – a rich state of affairs in which natural needs are satisfied and natural gifts fruitfully employed, a state of affairs that inspires joyful wonder as its Creator and Savior opens doors and welcomes the creatures in whom he delights. Shalom, in other words, is the way things ought to be.

COT: Talked about The Little Drummer Boy – he didn’t have anything to bring to Jesus, but he had a drum and he played his heart out for the King.  Don’t ever think you have nothing to offer to the King.

It recalls the story of the widow at the temple. She gives very little compared to the larger tithes being offered by the wealthy Pharisees, but the offering represents all she owns in the world

The Legend of the Candy Cane

A few facts about the candy cane:
-It was originally straight and white. The red stripes were added around 1900.
-Candy Canes have been around for 350 years
-Candy canes were originally invented to help keep children quite during the Christmas Eve services

The main thing I wanted to share about the Candy Cane is how you can use it to share the message of Jesus

o They look like a shepherd’s hook or the letter J for Jesus.
o The white represents the purity of Jesus and the red to symbolize the blood he shed for our sins and the 3 fine lines are for the Holy Trinity.
o The hardness of the candy cane represents the solid foundation we have in Jesus.
o The candy cane was also made to be given as a gift, representing the love of Jesus when he gave us the gift of salvation.

Every HIM received at least 2 candy canes, one for them and one to share and tell the story.

“When we were utterly helpless, Christ came at just the right time and died for us sinners. Now, most people would not be willing to die for an upright person, though someone might perhaps be willing to die for a person who is especially good. But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭5‬:‭ 6-8‬

There is nothing that you could ever do to make God love you less, and there is nothing that you could ever do to make God love you more. Let me repeat that.

COT:
I have a question for us to ponder this morning. Do you often find yourself arguing with others? Do you do so at work, at home? Why do we like to argue so much? It was recently pointed out to me by my wife that I tend to argue a lot with my son in particular. It was also pointed out to me that I tend to want to prove that I am right on a matter even if it takes going out of my way to do so. Case and point, I recently took a different route home from church than usual just to prove to my son that I was correct that a house had Halloween lights and not Christmas lights. He still argued with me anyway.
Is arrogance really that bad? Take a look at
‭‭Romans‬ ‭1:28‭-‬31‬ ‭NASB95‬‬
“[28] And just as they did not see fit to acknowledge God any longer, God gave them over to a depraved mind, to do those things which are not proper, [29] being filled with all unrighteousness, wickedness, greed, evil; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, malice; they are gossips, [30] slanderers, haters of God, insolent, arrogant, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, [31] without understanding, untrustworthy, unloving, unmerciful;”
Arrogance is among a list of evil things, including murder, that are unacceptable to God.
Proverbs 16:5 uses strong language against it as well.
“[5] Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the Lord; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished.”
Thinking too highly of our own opinions is sinful. It is absolutely essential that we hold firm when it comes to the truth of scripture. However, sometimes we need to set aside our opinions for the sake of unity. I will leave you with this scripture.
‭‭Romans‬ ‭12:10‭-‬18‬ ‭NASB95‬‬
