COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Last week, we buried my grandmother – Edith Otten.  At her funeral, my mother shared many fond memories and spoke of the legacy that her mother passed down to her.  She also read from the Psalms;

Psalm 39:4-5

“Lord, remind me how brief my time on earth will be.

Remind me that my days are numbered—

how fleeting my life is.

You have made my life no longer than the width of my hand.

My entire lifetime is just a moment to you;

at best, each of us is but a breath.”

Seneca the Younger was a citizen of ancient Rome – a philosopher, a statesman, and an advisor to emperor Nero.  According to legend, he corresponded with Paul the Apostle.  Some early Christian writers, such as Martin of Braga, were influenced by his philosophies.  Among Seneca’s many known works is “De Brevitate Vitae” – The Shortness of Life.  This stoic work contains many nuggets of wisdom, including;

“It’s not that we have a short time to live, but that we waste a lot of it.”

Psalm 90 is unique among the Psalms; in that it is the only Psalm attributed to Moses.  Verse 12, “Teach us to number our days carefully so that we may develop wisdom in our hearts.”

Someday there will be a headstone with your name on it.  It will have the date you were born and the date that you died.  In between those dates, there will be a DASH.  That dash represents today, this week, this year.  You are living that DASH.  Are you doing your utmost to use your precious few years wisely?

What bad habits do you need to put to death?

What good habits do you need to cultivate into your life?

What hatchets need buried?

What relationships need investment?

Lord, teach us to number our days carefully – not so that we would fear death, but rather that we would be encouraged to live life well!

Rocky Balboa moment at the Project

THE SCENE: A little cooler.  Perfect!
F3 WELCOME & DISCLAIMER
WARM-O-RAMA:

15 SSH, 15 mountain climbers, 10 tempo squats, 10 windmill
THA-THANG:
Mosey to the AO’s biggest hill (i.e. K2/5 hill, The Ridge, etc…it goes by many names at this point).  Perform a pyramid with merkins at the bottom and squats at the top:  10, 20, 30, 20, 10 reps.

Covering some ground this morning we moseyed over to the track at the high school.  We got the whole body covered at the track.  We performed the following exercises at the 100 meter marks and added a station up the steps on the west side of the school (definitely feeling some Rocky Balboa at the top!).

  • 10 diamond merkins
  • 20 narrow squats
  • 15, 4-ct Freddie Mercury

We moseyed back to the flag and got a little Mary in.
MARY:

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Matthew 7:13-14 – “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it.  For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.”

We can be “all-in” with our faith, but if we have errors in our convictions, we can be one of the many mentioned above.  Paul, before he met Christ on the road to Damascus, was zealous for the Lord.  However, he was persecuting Christians!  Jesus corrected Paul and he became one of the biggest influencers for the Church.  Consider the things you hear about God and the Bible and study them to make sure they are true.  Always seek the truth!

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
The flight back from Vegas is full of disappointed people who were hoping to get lucky and hit a life-changing jackpot.

Proverbs 29:18 “Where there is no VISION, the people perish”

Proverbs 19:21 “Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails”

Men,
The good things in life are far too important to be left up to chance.  Relationships – particularly with wives and kids, careers, lifestyle… these are things that you CANNOT leave to luck alone.
This week, prayerfully cast (or re-cast) a VISION for an area of your life that you’ve let slip into idleness (which we all do!).  Work toward that VISION, rather than letting life happen to you.

My VISION is to be consistent in showing warmth and affection to my wife – where laziness and living by chance alone makes me hot-and-cold, which is confusing as heck to her.

Here’s a good resource to help you categorically cast vision in your life; https://www.life.church/chazown/
(“chazown” is Hebrew for “vision”)

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
An excerpt from Day 2 of “Known- Finding Deep Friendships in a Shallow World”
Theologian Paul Tillich articulated the distinction beautifully when he said, “Language…has created the word ‘loneliness’ to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word ‘solitude’ to express the glory of being alone.” One is toxic. The other is life giving.
The alone we speak of here is the toxic kind. Almost anything can trigger it. Aloneness unchecked turns us in on ourselves and destroys perspective. The gathered pain is an inch-by-inch slide off an emotional cliff. It is isolating. Left unresolved, it is a cancer.
Who chooses to be alone and disoriented in the dark? No one. Who wants to experience moments of unbridled joy or great hardship by themselves? No one. Human contact is life itself.
It is important to remember that F3 is intended to be more than just a fitness class. It is a venue for relationships. F3 is an excellent way to prevent loneliness for men.
