THE THANG:
We went Exhortation and its role among the 4 leadership principles and how to use it to overcome obstacles. Some points we talked about were:
– How bullying can happen if a leader uses power without missionality
– The fear of pain and chaos is something a leader must help his team to overcome through exhortation
– Leadership credibility and the difference between being empathetic and sympathetic

THE THANG:
Three big parts to the section:
1) Why persuasion is better than compulsive chicanery, or Carrots over Sticks – we debated somewhat whether the extended analogy to communism v. capitalism verges on a tangent. We also tried to work through the question of whether compulsion is appropriate in certain situations, e.g. kids, gross trouble makers, etc.
2) The primary opposing force to persuasion is procrastination – some discussion of how inertia and momentum are two sides of the same coin
3) The best way to make progress with persuasion is small, incremental movements, not wholesale conversion – I think it was generally agreed that this was the golden nugget of the Q point. High resonance. Led into some work shopping of the particular and practical application.

Today, we started with a prayer and began to discuss the waypoints of an effective leader touching on how small movements can lead to big victories. Also, we touched on casting visions to others with the big picture and reverting back to the small increments it takes to get there. We also discussed issues of trust between the virtuous leader and those he means to lead, trust that the leader’s vision doesn’t have to be so spectacularly radical. We touched on the survivor and sad clown as well. In wrapping it up, that to lead right a man must first get right and then live right. We closed with a prayer, all in all a wonderful meeting. There were many side points discussed, too many to mention, but all very insightful.

THE THANG: The general alignment of skill within a shared leadership team.
– Leadership = mechanics + fruit + evaluation + adjustment
– Doing what, when and how you are supposed to do it.
– Getting wrapped up in trying to be perfect can be a hindrance.
– I was in it for the process, not for the product.
– God loves the process.
– Practice to remain competent!
– Competence requires time, if you try to speed up the growth, you may damage the roots.
– There’s a difference between skill and getting lucky.
– Paul tells Timothy to continue to practice so that his progess is evident ot all. 1 Timothy 4:15-16.
– Personal Growth = leadership of the man in your head

Homework: Bring examples of how the following relates to Trust (next week’s topic.) – “The more you grow, the more is required of you as you move from learning as a student into transfering what you have learned to another (leadership.)”
