CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Luke 16:10-14

“Whoever can be trusted with small things can also be trusted with big things. Whoever is dishonest in little things will be dishonest in big things too. If you cannot be trusted with worldly riches, you will not be trusted with the true riches. And if you cannot be trusted with the things that belong to someone else, you will not be given anything of your own.” [Luke 16:10-14]

Your body and spirit were entrusted to you. Therefore, take a good care of your physical body and your mental state. Do not be afraid to seek for help. Do not face your problems alone. Be brave to admit and to recognize your issues. Be honest to yourself.

Habits. We all have them. Some good (those involved with family, work, F3). Some not so good.

Oftentimes, we seek to change our bad habits and create new and better ones. We make resolutions. We resolve to get in shape, to eat healthier, to spend more time with our families. But the fact of the matter is that 88% of new year’s resolutions (if you make those) end up failing and we’re left feeling frustrated and powerless to make progress.

We need milk before solid food. Hebrews 5:14 says “… solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”

So what does it mean to be trained by constant practice?…
A few years ago I picked up this little book called “Small Move, Big Change”. It was an easy read and takes a simple approach to changing behaviors and ultimately our habits. We make our goals too broad or idealistic, and at some point, our autopilot kicks in. Autopilot is that system of unconscious habits and preferences that have become so engrained through repetition.

So what’s the solution to changing? It starts with a bitesize goal. Something that focuses on a specific change in behavior and not a result. Instead of committing to “I’m going to eat better” or “I’m going to be more organized”, a microresolution would break that into something easy and measureable. “I’m going to pass on the cookies at our Wednesday meetings”. “I’m going to make my bed every morning”. Easy. Measureable. Successful.

You can even make these a little more personal. Analyze your habits to determine the single changes that will have the greatest impact. Think about your daily cues. I always snack after a trip to the grocery, usually even before I get everything put away. So, a more personal microresolution for me might be “I will not snack during or after putting away the groceries”. Easy. Measurable. Successful.

So you get the point here. Don’t set too many microresolutions. Make a couple and when those changes in behavior become habits, set new ones. Easy. Measureable. Successful.

Look for the little triggers in your life – little temptations and sins that could grow up to ruin you. Little lust grows up to be adultery. Little indulgence grows up to be addiction. Little anger grows up to be rage. Each of those baby sins – when they are fully grown, can RUIN you. It is far easier to kill something in its infancy, than to try and kill it when it is mature. KILL those things while they are tiny. “…watch out, because sin is crouching at the door, ready to pounce on you! You must master it before it masters you.” (Genesis 4:7). You have tens of men at Shamrock who would be honored to walk that path with you and can do so confidentially, if needed. Reach out for help and accountability!

ANNOUNCEMENTS: Shovelflag handoff Sept 1 and 5
COT: Today, I need to talk to you about a serious topic, I need to talk to you about how you smell. Specifically, how you smell after being here.
Does being out here change the way you smell to God?
Before I get into that question, 3 things about odors
1) There is no denying it’s real, but you can’t see it.
Remind us there are senses we have that we don’t use all the time, but show us a reality we often miss. Don’t miss the fact that there are realities we can’t see. Use the spiritual sense God gave you to experience Him and the spiritual realm.
2) Smells invoke emotional responses
Nose, Absorb into blood> Olfactory Bulb: Sort smells> Olfactory Cortex: Identify smell. It helps you recognize if you’re smelling a flower, Butterknife, or unwashed gloves.> Hippocampus: This is a really important area for memory. It’s like a librarian in your brain that helps store and organize memories. When you smell something, the hippocampus can help connect that smell to past experiences or memories, making smells a powerful trigger for recalling memories.> Which is right next to and part of your: Amygdala: This part is in charge of emotions and feelings. Smells can evoke strong emotions and reactions because the amygdala connects them to past experiences. That’s why certain smells might make you feel happy, relaxed, or even nostalgic.
God uses smells and memories to bring us emotion, joy, sadness, longing. Realize this and lean into it. Don’t be afraid to experience all the emotions.
3) You can get so used to a smell you don’t even notice it anymore – but you still stink
On the good things in life, don’t get so used to the amazing access we have to God in Prayer or through free, immediate access to his Word. Or freedome to worship or meet here. Enjoy the “smell” of your spiritual life. God has blessed us beyond measure.
4) Everyone has a smell. What do you smell of? Selfishness or selflessness? Joy or Despair? Hope or Hopelessness? You may have to ask a brother to get the honest answer.

2 Cor 2: 15 For we are to God the pleasing aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. 16 To the one we are an aroma that brings death; to the other, an aroma that brings life.
Phil 4:18: walk in the way of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.
Check your heart, make sure you are spending your days in a way that is an offering to God.

Matthew 11:28-30
28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”
So many times I pray that God would just take this burden away from me or someone I know. Jesus is saying that he wants to grab onto you and help you walk with that burden. He will make it easier to carry and we will grow through this exercise with him.
