“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And after fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, command these stones to become loaves of bread.”“But he answered, “It is written, “‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Then the devil took him to the holy city and set him on the pinnacle of the temple and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, “‘He will command his angels concerning you,’ and “‘On their hands they will bear you up, lest you strike your foot against a stone.’” Jesus said to him, “Again it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written, “‘You shall worship the Lord your God and him only shall you serve.’” Then the devil left him, and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.”

Message
The Simple Act of Giving
The following true story was reported on NBC’s Today Show. In 2018, , Joey Romano, a college student at the University of Texas at Austin was skateboarding near the campus when he had to swerve to avoid a car. He slammed into a ditch and broke his wrist. He didn’t have good medical insurance and was worried about the cost of an ambulance. So, he called Uber.
The damage to Joey’s wrist was bad. When the Uber driver, Beni Lukumu arrived, Romano was still lying on the ground. Lukumu gently helped Romano to the passenger seat and reclined the seat back to minimize pain and discomfort. Romano had Lukumu take him to an Urgent Care Clinic. However, the break was too serious and doctors directed Romano to go to a hospital emergency room.
Lukumu insisted on driving Romano to the hospital at no charge. He also found out that Romano had no family nearby to come to help him. Lukumu had immigrated to the United States from Congo at the age of 25 and knew what it was like to be far from loved ones. Although he had been planning on driving for Uber for a full day, he decided to stay with Joey Romano, helping to sign him in and get him to a room where the doctors operated. Romano recalled being on a morphine drip and looking over at Beni Lukumu, his warm presence making him feel more like a long-time friend than a stranger.
Joey’s stay at the hospital lasted from 2 pm to 8pm. By the time he was discharging, his grandmother, who lived in Houston, Texas, arrived. She offered Lukumu payment not only for the ride to the hospital but for all the time he has spent there with her grandson. Beni politely refused but did agree to join them for dinner. And a friendship was started that has lasted over seven years.
What Beni Lukumu didn’t know at the time was that Joey was at a low point in his life when the skateboarding accident occurred. He was still grieving the loss of an older brother from leukemia. He had shut himself off from others and was having trouble just getting by. That day with Beni was a turning point for Joey. Romano said, “That one act of kindness helped me see the good in the world again. Having him spend his entire day with me – a complete stranger, for no reason than the goodness in his heart, helped me to put things into perspective. Beni absolutely changed my life.”
Beni Lukumu, who is an accomplished gospel music singer, now works in the insurance industry in Austin, Texas. Joey Romano is now a renewable energy developer. The friends check in on each other a couple of times a year.
Beni Lukumu’s comments to the interviewer were these: “The world is so divided now. What we need is love and kindness.

Prayer Requests
Prayers for Pinto, our brother who has Multiple Myeloma Cancer and has recently received T-Cell treatment. He just got out of the hospital yesterday which was his birthday. Prayers for Will, the 5-year-old who is a student of Drum Major’s wife and is getting treatment for cancer. Prayers of praise for F3 Pluto ( Hugh Nystrom), who like Beni Lukumu in today’s message, performed an act of kindness last week for a fellow named John whose car was at Lakeshore Park but would not start. Pluto used his Triple A to get a tow truck to take John’s car to Firestone. He helped John pay for the repair and when Firestone couldn’t fix the car that Saturday, even put John (who lives in the Crossville area) an Extended Stay until his car could be repaired.
