Grab keys and mosey out of the pavilion, out of the park and across the street to the parking lot of Fountain City United Methodist Church.  Routine is going down Jacob’s ladder.  Start in the lower parking lot, where you always do 5 BBSUs.  Run up the parking lot until you reach the split, and crawl bear up the storm drain to the upper parking lot.  Once you reach the upper lot, you have 10 eight count bodybuilders, then run out to the sidewalk and back down the hill to the lower lot.
The five BBSUs at the bottom remains the same for every iteration, but you decrease your reps of eight counts at the top.  Rounds 10-6 are eight counts, rounds 5-1 switch to diamond merkins at the top (this felt generous).

Everyone finished mostly at the same time, after which I thought we needed some lower body work.  Has been a while since I’d thrown in leg blasters, so we knocked out a round of that.  All exercises done together in cadence with no rest in between:

  • 20 squats
  • 20 lunges
  • 10 jump squats

I forgot how fun it is to run after doing those.  The plan was to reverse the ladder and do 10-6 with diamond merkins and 5-1 with eight counts, but time was a little short and I wanted to hit the escalator.  So we moseyed around to the parking lot adjacent to the duck pond.  I stole Swanson’s idea for the escalator without running from Tuesday.  Exercises as follows:

  • Imperial walkers (left right one)
  • Hello Dolly (4 count)
  • Alternating shoulder taps (left right one)
  • Crab cakes (left right one)
  • Dips on curb
  • Hand release merkins

Start at 1 rep of each, work down the list and return to the top.  Increase reps each time on the way to 10.  I think we finished 8 before time ran out.

Cap’n had sent a text with the following passage from The Daily Stoic: “When the standards have been set, things are tested and weighed.  And the work of philosophy is just this, to examine and uphold the standards, but the work of a truly good person is in using the standards when they know them.” – Epictetus
To me, one of the standards I need to both set and make sure that I am upholding is making my actions and decisions come from a place of love.  That doesn’t mean to always be nice, because as we’ve learned from the Q source you have to be able to tell people the difficult truths in life.  However, sugarcoating a problem or ignoring it also is not upholding the standard.  I need to make sure my actions are always based in love and to leave no doubt that that is the case.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

The symbolism of the “Mogadishu Mile”
  • You cover a total distance of one mile. Even though the soldiers actually walked between 2.5 and 3 miles depending on their starting point, it has become known as a “mile”. You carry your CMU during the run to symbolize the gear the soldiers carried.
  • 19 reps – one honoring each soldier of Task Force Ranger killed during the battle and the day after.
  • CMU Swings – as the soldiers held up their rifles the entire time
  • CMU Squats – as they sought cover behind anything available
  • CMU Push-ups – as they fell to the ground and had to get back up
  • Don’t let the CMU go – symbolic for the dedication the soldiers showed towards their creed to ‘not leave a man behind
On October 3rd, 1993, members of the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment and 1st SFOD-D (Delta Force), supported by pilots from the 160th Aviation Regiment (Nightstalkers) and other SF units, went into the city of Mogadishu, Somalia to execute Operation ‘Gothic Serpent’, an attempt to apprehend key players in Mohammed Farrah Aidid’s dictatorship. While the initial mission went smoothly, things took a turn for the worse when two aircraft were shot down, forever coining the phrase ‘Blackhawk Down’. Determined to not leave a man behind, and also facing the task of securing the crash sites, Rangers and Deltas, scattered at several locations throughout the city, under heavy fire, most of them wounded, and low on supplies held their positions until the morning hours of October 4th.
As help from the 10th Mountain Division finally arrived, the armored vehicles could not accommodate all of the soldiers. At this point, some of them began their exit to a rally point on foot, under heavy fire, dehydrated and sleep deprived, all of them wounded in one way or another. This has become known as the “Mogadishu Mile”.

As men we don’t always rely on our brothers we have a need. We try to do things on our own. These men show us that when we let our brothers have our backs we can accomplish many things.

From the movie ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty’.
Walter is an example of a Sad Clown. He spends his time lost in the daydreams of what he could do. Life throws a curveball at him and he takes the opportunity to step up and accelerate. At the end of the movie, he meets a photographer that he has worked with all his career but never actually met. At this point the photographer is trying to capture an image of an elusive snow leopard, called a ghost leopard. The leopard finally appears and he lets Walter view it through the camera, he then makes a choice to not capture the moment, but experience it.

Too many times in our lives we try to control the moments in our lives instead of actively experiencing them. We need to take the time to experience life.
