CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

We tend to make judgements about people based on our preconceived notions of who a black person a trans person a Muslim person any person is. Why do we do this? What is the point? Why can’t we just love and accept who people are?

John 15:17 says

“This is my command: Love each other.”

1 John 4:8 says

“But anyone who does not love does not know God, for God is love.”

As someone relatively on the outside of religion, when I hear the hateful words coming from leaders and others who claim to be godly, it makes me think I don’t want any part of religion. So I plead with you who do proselytize your faith to set a better example. The example of Christ to love everyone.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

On the way to the beatdown this morning I heard the song “Get Along” by Kenny Chesney. I’m not very good at remembering song lyrics, but I remember that he says “afraid to die, afraid to live” and that really got me thinking. I think we are all afraid to die, at least to some extent. But we don’t often think about being afraid to live. Why have that crappy job that we hate when we spend the whole day dreaming about doing something we are passionate about? Why watch other people accomplish things and think it would be amazing, but never go out and try for ourselves? Sure there is always a chance that we can fail, but why not try? Failure is just a lesson. Without failure, we can’t grow and learn. Settling in to our comfort zones and living an “okay” life is not what we were made for. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there for what you believe in and what you are passionate about. God gave us the gift of this life, don’t be afraid to live it.

HIM ( High Impact man) or as Detention puts it. Humble Invest Mental. The acronym that I love and used it on TANK. he exuded ALL three this past weekend and really, the past several months, planning for the Hardship Hill event. Tank put himself last and his HUMBLE disposition was apparent(by the way, I know Tank pretty well and he is a SMARTASS too, LOL!!). He INVESTED himself for the sole purpose of raising money for OEW by dedicating a tone of time and effort into the Hardship Hill race. With the stresses of putting on such an event, he showed MENTAL toughness through out and never waivered on his attitude. Not to say deep down(like all of us) he was stressing a little, but he NEVER burdened anybody with his stresses about the event. He was always positive. Truly a HIM and I am proud to call him my F3 brotha but more importantly , my friend!
MOLESKIN:
Don’t be like Tank, be your self but take the “HIM” and apply it to your everyday actions. I know I need to! Love you guys!

Worry and Stress

It’s part of human nature to worry and stress. I for one, worry about everything. Lately, I’ve been more worried about this VQ than anything else. I’m sure there have been times in everyone’s lives were you have been worried or stressed about something. Whether it is getting the promotion at work, or getting laid off and wondering how you will provide for your family. For me I have to constantly remind myself of what God said about worrying in Matthew 6:25-34.

Matthew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?

26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

27 And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?[a]

28 And why are you anxious about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin,

29 yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.

30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith?

31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’

32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.

33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

34 “Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

There will be days were we will feel overwhelmed and worried about that day or the coming months, but as believers in something greater than ourselves we must continue to purse God. We must be patient for His plan to unfold and allow Him to work in our lives. Focus on His message and He will help you through your endeavors.

BOM
Six years ago I was introduced to something that has become a powerful tool in my life personally and as I try to help and speak life into others.  A gentleman I work with used to be a very successful tennis pro and reaction coach.  He had a successful business in New York working with college and professional athletes helping them take their game to the next level.  Over the years he noticed something.  While each athlete had their own approach to their sport, the real elite players all shared a common mindset.  He calls it the mindset of a champion.  It goes like this:

  • I know what to do.
    • If you don’t have the knowledge you are willing to do whatever it takes to attain it.
  • I have practiced and have done this under pressure.
    • Knowing isn’t enough. Champions know that practice doesn’t make perfect, practice makes permanent. They take that knowledge and train with it, practicing it over and over again.  They also embrace high pressure situations and put it into practice there as well.
  • I take the next right step and don’t worry about the results.
    • When the game is on the line, they trust the work and don’t focus on the results. They’ve done the work and know if they stick to what they know the end will take care of itself.

Since identifying this pattern, he made a very small change that makes it 100% applicable in all areas of life: physical, mental, relational and spiritual:

  • I know what to do.
  • I have practiced and have done this under pressure.
  • I can take the next right step and trust God with the results.

I know…I’ve practiced…I trust God.

This simple progression of thought is actually not new.  I see it in the life of King David.  One of the most popular tales of David is his battle with Goliath.  The young man displays immense courage and defeats the giant, but that’s not where the story starts.  It starts with a young man spending hours in the desert watching over and protecting his father’s sheep.  God was training him in the desert to be one of the greatest HIMs the world has ever known!  David himself shares the mindset of a champion with Saul.  When he meets him, Saul tries to fit David for battle with his equipment.  Listen to David’s reply,

“But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth (‘I know what to do). When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it (‘I’ve practiced and done it under pressure). Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.  The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine. (‘I can take the next right step and trust God with the results)
Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”

I have worked to apply this mindset in all areas of my life: helping my kids with school, walking through a conflict with my wife, starting a new program at work, completing a GORUCK event.  It works and helps keep me grounded and focused when it matters.  It also constantly reminds me that I have a choice to make each day to embrace whatever comes and see it as training to get better.  I’ve taught it to my kids and they have used it to help study for tests, tryout for soccer and walk through conflict with friends.  I share it today praying it is helpful for you as well.

I know…I’ve practiced…I trust God.
