CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

ONCE THERE WERE two brothers who inherited their father’s land. The two brothers divided the land in half and each one farmed his own section. Over time, the older brother married and had six children, while the younger brother never married.

One night, the younger brother lay awake. “It’s not fair that each of us has half the land to farm,” he thought. “My brother has six children to feed and I have none. He should have more grain than I do.”

So that night the younger brother went to his silo, gathered a large bundle of wheat, and climbed the hill that separated the two farms and over to his brother’s farm. Leaving the wheat in his brother’s silo, the younger brother returned home, feeling pleased with himself.

Earlier that very same night, the older brother was also lying awake. “It’s not fair that each of us has half the land to farm,” he thought. “In my old age my wife and I will have our grown children to take care of us, not to mention grandchildren, while my brother will probably have none. He should at least sell more grain from the fields now so he can provide for himself with dignity in his old age.”

So that night, too, he secretly gathered a large bundle of wheat, climbed the hill, left it in his brother’s silo, and returned home, feeling pleased with himself.

The next morning, the younger brother was surprised to see the amount of grain in his barn unchanged. “I must not have taken as much wheat as I thought,” he said, bemused. “Tonight I’ll be sure to take more.”

That very same moment, his older brother was also standing in his barn, musing much the same thoughts.

After night fell, each brother gathered a greater amount of wheat from his barn and in the dark, secretly delivered it to his brother’s barn. The next morning, the brothers were again puzzled and perplexed.

“How can I be mistaken?” each one scratched his head. “There’s the same amount of grain here as there was before I cleared the pile for my brother. This is impossible! Tonight I’ll make no mistake – I’ll take the pile down to the very floor. That way I’ll be sure the grain gets delivered to my brother.”

The third night, more determined than ever, each brother gathered a large pile of wheat from his barn, loaded it onto a cart, and slowly pulled his haul through the fields and up the hill to his brother’s barn. At the top of the hill, under the shadow of a moon, each brother noticed a figure in the distance.  Who could it be?

When the two brothers recognized the form of the other brother and the load he was pulling behind, they realized what had happened. Without a word, they dropped the ropes to their carts and embraced.

Romans 12:9-13

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Matt 11:24 “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first.”

As we overcome the struggles and temptations in our life, we must fill in the void the leave. We should replace and not just displace because a bad habit will come back with a vengeance when we leave an opening. Take the time, money and thought you once gave to your indulgences and now use it to grow physically, financially and spiritually. Start saying yes to your kids when they ask to do something with you, be the first the volunteer at church, take a coworker out to lunch or invite them over for dinner. Stop being men who DON’T do this or that and start being men who DO. When familiar sin comes calling, you can turn on the neon sign that says – NO VACANCY!

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Matt 13: 45 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant looking for fine pearls. 46 When he found one of great value, he went away and sold everything he had and bought it.

So valuable that he went away and sold everything…

There are two types of oyster produced pearls: natural and cultured. Natural Pearls form when an irritant – usually a parasite and not the proverbial grain of sand – works its way into an oyster, mussel, or clam. As a defense mechanism, a fluid is used to coat the irritant. Layer upon layer of this coating, called ‘nacre’, is deposited until a lustrous pearl is formed. A cultured pearl undergoes the same process except that the irritant is a surgically implanted bead. The cultured pearl is a pearl on the outside with a thin, exterior layer of nacre while the natural pearl is pearl throughout.

Takes years to form a natural pearl. If we look within ourselves, we too find parasites that try to steal the best of our strength, thought, joy and holiness. The temptation is smother the parasite with a bunch of nacre all at once but then you will have an uneven pearl, which has no beauty. It takes thin layers, little by little, layer by layer, day by day, prayer by prayer, scripture by scripture. The natural pearl within is started and then grown into a thing to be desired.

This is the fine pearl that the man in the parable went and sold all he had to go purchase. As HIMs, we embrace this grind in the spirit of James 1 – 2 Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

The kingdom of Heaven, the fine pearl, the natural pearl is worth selling all you have for. So if we are going to go all in,  we mist ensure that we have strength and faith throughout and not just a pretty exterior with a false center.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Exodus 17:8-13 8 Then Amalek came and fought against Israel at Rephidim. 9 So Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us and go out, fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will station myself on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 Joshua did just as Moses [i]told him, [j]and fought against Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 So it came about, when Moses held his hand up, that Israel prevailed; but when he let his hand [k]down, Amalek prevailed. 12 And Moses’ hands were heavy. So they took a stone and put it under him, and he sat on it; and Aaron and Hur supported his hands, one on one side and one on the other. So his hands were steady until the sun set. 13 And Joshua [l]defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

When you get tired battling for the Lord, who is your Aaron, who is your Hur? Who places a stone under you. Who will support your hands so that they will be steady until the sun sets? No one is called to fight the good fight alone. Spend yourself in battle yet surround yourself with good men who will support you so that we always take the fight to the enemy. Today, if you feel the fatigue in your shoulders, say their names, the names of those who support you. If you don’t have someone YET, then pray for a name to be revealed and the confidence to bring them alongside you.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Pretend that you’ve heard of the legend of the world’s wisest man who will answer any question that is brought before him. But to get to him, you have to cross the high seas, traverse barren deserts, brave the frozen tundras and scale mountain peaks. You set out with a team but you were the only one to survive. What question would you ask him?

No such man exists but if he did and he instead found you, would you listen to his words if he had something to tell you? Would you give him your ear and attention. Would you study and then implement his words? He isn’t going to come find you either but he did leave you a letter. This is the book of Ecclesiastes, written by King Solomon.

He says you are over-investing in the things of this world. It is okay to have a woman in your life, she just shouldn’t be your life. It is okay to work and enjoy your work, but your life shouldn’t be defined by your work. Alcohol, foolishness, folly, and activity under the sun is meaningless, vanity, a chasing after the wind. This is like painting the walls in a burning house, you would never do that. This life too is fading away, it is the burning house, it is temporary. Do not over-invest in this life. In chapter three, he tells us not to get caught up in the details of life, that there is a season to all things. Enjoy or respect them in their season but as they come, let them also go.

In the 12th chapter, Solomon says that when all has been examined, nothing is left but to fear God and keep his commandments, this is the whole duty of man. God has placed eternity in our hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11) and we will never be able to escape our design. That is why you see the rich, the powerful, the famous do stupid things because they are trying to fill the void in their hearts when eternity belongs.

Let us lead simple and effective lives, not over-investing in this temporary shelter, and we will be surprised by how far we can go.
