THA THANG:

We did a little Hardship Hill preparation training…

4 stations (obstacles) in the parking lot – 4 more across the street.  1-minute EMOM timer

Visit an obstacle and do the exercise until timer goes off.  Then run to the wall, scramble up and over, and run across the street to the next station.  Obstacles were;

  • Tire hit
  • Ball Slams
  • I Merkins
  • Alternating waves
  • Heavy lunges
  • Stack squat
  • Jump rope
  • 10 thrusters + 15 curls (repeat)

First lap is finished – whew!  Recover to your canopy and plop yourself down in a chair.  Someone throws you a beer and someone else thrusts a bowl of chili into your hand – great!  While you’re there just relaxing, grab a CMU and do;

  • 30 triceps
  • 30 curls
  • 10 Chaco burpees

Now, get your muddy shoes back on your feet, because here come your teammates over the last obstacle and it’s your turn to run another lap.  This time, obstacles were;

  • Slam ball throw
  • Tire flip
  • Battle rope slams
  • “H” Merkins
  • Goblet squats
  • Good mornings
  • Jump rope
  • 10 thrusters + 15 triceps (repeat)

Second lap is finished – good golly!  Recover to your canopy and collapse onto a blanket in the grass.  Ah, your wife is there, and she brought you your house slippers and a warm mug of hot cocoa – thanks, wife!  Everyone on your team is smoked, so a couple of JUCO studs offer to run your team’s next lap – sweet.  While you’re relaxing, grab a CMU and do;

  • Single arm OHP – 10 each side
  • 20 CMU swings
  • 30 triceps

What the?!?!  Here come those JUCO guys over the last obstacle – how the heck did they get around the course so quickly?  Oh no – your teammate who is supposed to run next is in the port-a-john.  You’re already beat, but you have to do another lap.  Too tired to run, this time we’ll crawl.  EMOM bear crawl to the wall, touch, then sprint to the next station. Obstacles reverted back to;

  • Tire hit
  • Ball Slams
  • I Merkins
  • Alternating waves
  • Heavy lunges
  • Stack squat
  • Jump rope
  • 10 thrusters + 15 curls (repeat)

Finished!  You won’t be taking home any wooden trophies this year – but you finished the race without any significant injuries.  We’ll count that as a win.

Me and 5 of the best men I know

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

I told a short story about an acquaintance, Sarah.  My wife and I have known her and her husband, Ty, for nearly as long as we’ve lived in TN.  They used to live near us but moved several years ago and we’ve fallen out of touch.  Last week, my wife forwarded a blog post to me – it was then that I found out Sarah has been battling a rare and aggressive cancer.  In her post, she writes about how there are only three clinics in the nation which specialize in treating this cancer – and that her family feels strongly that she should seek treatment at MD Anderson in Houston.  So, they are planning for her to move to Houston for 3-4 months.  Looks like months of prep, surgery in December, twice-a-day radiation treatments…

She talks about sitting in the hotel lobby after the initial consult and calling a friend to unburden herself.  “Knowing that I will be hardly able to walk, where do I live and how do I get myself to the treatments?  How do we plan for our young daughters to visit if I don’t know how I’ll be feeling?  How do I keep running our small business remotely?  How the heck are we going to pay for all of this?  I don’t want to be needy and ask people for help…”  Her friend responded, “If you don’t let people come alongside you and help, then you are robbing them of the joy of participation.”

I love that phrase – “the Joy of Participation”.  Generosity is participation.  When you are generous with your time, your money, your resources – you are participating in other people’s challenges and dreams.  That can be a source of a tremendous amount of joy.

In his book, “Seven Habits of Highly Effective People”, Steven Covey talks about the difference between living with a scarcity mindset and living with an abundance mindset.  When you have a scarcity mindset, you protect and hoard all that you have.  When you live with an abundance mindset, you give joyfully knowing that you have more than enough to meet your own needs.  He didn’t make up that concept – it’s in Scripture.

Proverbs 11:24 NLT, “Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything.”

Yesterday afternoon, my oldest son and I drove to Chattanooga to pick up a bike.  I’ve been looking for a mountain bike for him for more than a year – checking Facebook marketplace nearly every day – visiting the local shops over and over.  For bike manufacturers and retailers, the last 18 months have been crazy busy – and for consumers, it’s been crazy difficult to find bikes.  It seems like for every bike that comes in, there are 10 people on a waitlist for it.  But with some careful planning, we were finally able to get him one and he is thrilled.  Seeing him ride it last night was great – and I know that all the joyful times we will have riding will be worth all the time and planning that went into getting that bike.

That got me thinking…  What would it be like if I sought the Joy of Participation (i.e., the joy of giving generously) with the same deliberateness and dedication that I sought the joy of biking with my son?  What if I planned for and pursued generosity in the same way that I plan for a vacation?

Isaiah 32:8 NLT, “Generous people PLAN to do what is generous…”

Remember to be praying for Erector and his extended family this week

Biohack had a great suggestion related to planning your generosity – set-up a separate bank account and have funds auto-drafted into it monthly.  That way you’ll have those resources ready when you get an opportunity to participate in someone’s dream or struggle.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

This morning, the JUCO flag was planted at 863 feet above sea level.  As we stood there, I asked…

Do you ever fantasize about doing something exceptional and heroic?”  I do.  If only I had the chance, I would…rescue my kid as they are getting pulled out to sea by a riptide…I’d whip the pants off of some goon who’s broken into my home in the middle of the night…I’d grab the arm of an old woman just before she’s clobbered by a greyhound bus… If I ever get the chance, I could be great.

Do you ever worry that your life and legacy will be defined by the stupidest thing(s) you’ve done?”  I do.  I didn’t mean to yell at the kids… I never thought I’d do… What a mistake it was to…

but…

“It is not the billows, but the calm level of the sea, from which all heights and depths are measured.” – James Garfield

Mt. Everest (29,032’), Clingmans Dome (6,644’), and the JUCO parking lot (863’) are each measured from the sea at its average – not from the massive crest of a wave in a storm – nor by the lowest trough between two waves.  Like the sea, I believe that your life is better measured not by the exceptional, but by the typicalYour best chance at living a life of high-impact is not to wait for your heroic moment (which, in all likelihood will never come) – but to concentrate on living TODAY as a high-impact man.

Today, be an encourager to the people you are around.

Today, live with integrity in everything you do.

Today, be generous with your time and resources.

Today, be patient and slow to anger.

Today, be faithful to your wife with your thoughts and your eyes.

Today, show resolve in the face of your challenges.

Today, be kind to those whom you love as well as those who have wronged you.

Today, you can be that great man that we would all love to be and to know.

Do it again tomorrow and all the tomorrows after that – and you’ll be well on your way to being a HIM.

MOLESKIN:

You want to know the crazy story behind that James Garfield quote?

We pick up the tale at the 1880 Republican National Convention.  There are a series of presidential nominees being presented for Convention’s selection.  It is a long and boring ceremony…until the flamboyant New York Congressman, Roscoe Conklin, gets up and gives a rousing speech nominating none other than the Civil War Hero, Ulysses S. Grant.  The crowd goes nuts.  The convention is in pandemonium.

How would you like to be the follow-up act to that?  The very next speaker is the relatively unknown congressman, James Garfield – he’s there to present the nomination of his fellow Congressman from Ohio, John Sherman.  When he gets up, the crowd is still chanting, “Grant, Grant, Grant!”.

He tosses aside his prepared speech and begins with a word of praise for Grant.  Then he says this –

…as I sat in my seat and witnessed this demonstration, this assemblage seemed to me a human ocean in tempest. I have seen the sea lashed into fury and tossed into spray, and its grandeur moves the soul of the dullest man; but I remember that it is not the billows, but the calm level of the sea, from which all heights and depths are measured.”  He is comparing the crowd to the raging ocean – but noted that all heights on the earth are measured from the level sea.  It was his plea to decide on a nominee based on logic, not passion.

Know what happened?  The crowd was so impressed that the Convention ended up nominating…James Garfield.  Against his will!  He passionately appealed to them NOT to nominate him – and through each of the primaries, kept casting his own vote for John Sherman.  Ha!  The general election was held, and Garfield won the presidency – the whole time objecting to his own candidacy.  To my knowledge, he is only one of two men who were given the presidency against their own expressed desire —- the other being who, BB reader?  (I bet WaxJob knows…)

Garfield was brilliant and tremendously credentialed.  After the end of the civil war, our nation needed a leader for the ages.  Had he not been shot a mere 100 days into his presidency; he very well may have gone down in history as one of our nation’s greatest leaders.  This Sunday marks 120 years from the premature death of one of our nation’s might-have-been-greatest presidents.

Me and 17 of the best men that I know

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Ninety-eight years ago, the island of Japan was ravaged by the most devastating earthquake in recorded history up until that time. The tragic Canto earthquake began at noon and continued for more than three and a half hours, creating a casualty list that would stagger the imagination; 143,000 killed.

The compassionate heart of America was touched. In a matter of hours, a convoy of mercy ships was on the high seas headed for the stricken island. Those ships were equipped with the latest in medical supplies, food, and clothing and staffed with a corp of volunteer workers, doctors, and nurses to minister to the needs of the impacted millions. As the broken nation set about to rebuild her empire, in appreciation for such help from abroad, a famous five-word cablegram was received at the White House.  Signed by the Emperor himself, it read simply, “America, we will not forget.”

Less than a generation later, it was America that would suffer a disaster – this time, one that was unnatural.  December 7, 1941…the first light of dawn was just breaking over the peaceful Hawaiian Islands where, at anchor, lay the vast American fleet. Out of the blue, hurtling at lightning speed on wings of death, came kamikaze hellbent on inflicting destruction.  Relentlessly they pursued.  Battleship after battleship turned belly up. Sailors were strafed as they attempted to swim to safety. 2,300 men were killed in the savage sneak attack. Just eighteen short years after our mercy ships steamed into Tokyo Bay with American good-will…Japan had forgotten that compassion and mercy.

I have a hard time being too critical of that treachery…because I see it as a metaphor for what can happen in my own heart.  How easy it is to forget the incredible mercies that have been shown to us…

After the CSAUP workout two Saturdays ago, Mailbox, Butterknife, and I jumped into Fort Loudon Lake to cool off.  As we were standing in the lake and talking, I realized that we were almost directly across the lake from my friend’s house.  Although I rarely see him anymore, that friend is dear to me – because I hold him responsible for changing the trajectory of my life.  When I was a sad clown, when my ship was capsizing – God used that friend to get me turned in the right direction.  As I stood in the water, recalling where I once was and the path that I was headed down, a wave of deep gratitude swept over me – gratitude for the mercy and compassion that pivoted my life.  How easy it is to forget that mercy.  How easy it is to forget how my life would have been different.  How easy it can be to forget how far God has brought us and what he has delivered us from…

Psalm 143:4
Remember what God has done for you. Let His grace and mercy comfort you, and remind you of His unfailing love.”

Psalm 103:2
Let all that I am praise the Lord; may I never forget the good things he does for me.
