CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
The origin of the word “holiday” actually comes from a concatenation of the words “holy day”.
What is the focus during the American / Western Civ. season between the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas? The reason I like to call this “Black Friday: Discount Coupon Special” is that it’s so easy to miss what we’re supposed to be Thankful for (Christ’s redemption of us for His glory by His perfect sacrifice on the cross and subsequent resurrection from the grave) and what we are celebrating at Christmas (the miracle of God condescending by becoming a man and one in in every way like us, yet without sin).

With this knowledge, what ought we to do? 3 things we’ll take this Advent Season from a passage you probably didn’t think I’d talk about to start the Christmas season with:

Romans 8:12-17 – 12 So then, brothers,[e] we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. 14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons[f] of God. 15 For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Refocusing our gaze on Christ in the busyness and stress of all that is going on in our world is EXACTLY what our souls need.
1. v.12-13 We have debt – but not to the flesh but to the Spirit who called us to Christ. This is the Gift of Christmas.
When you give that gift to your friend, to your wife, to your son or daughter – you give out of what God has given you – and you and we have the opportunity to acknowledge that it’s not in us but all from Jesus
2. v.14-15 We have the Spirit of God that confirms us as children of God.
Anyone who has or has seen a young boy (say under 10) cry out to his father knows that Jesus said “11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!” (Matthew 7:11). We know that this is true, but we can appropriate this for ourselves because of the solid foundation with this promise from God. This is another gift from God.
3. v.16-17 Because we have the Spirit, we are co-heirs with Christ and have the privilege to suffer with Christ.
This may not seem like the greatest thing, but that is the beauty of what Christ did for us. He suffered outside the camp for us so that we can be made like Him. His substitutionary death for us on the cross to redeem us allows us to say with the apostles in Acts 5:41 Then they left the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name.
So, as you go through Advent, see what debt you have (to the Spirit). Remember that you are a child of God who gives you the gift of Salvation, which is eternity with Him. And remember that we can rejoice when suffer because that is what Jesus did for us and it puts us in the best company and place. And that gift is, ironically, the best place for us because it identifies us with Christ.

COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA6 faithful men.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Proverbs 20:6Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?

Faithfulness is maybe the most underrated fruit of the Spirit. Staying your post when it seems all hell is breaking loose is hard, yet it also is commended in Ecclesiastes 10:4If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for calmness[a] will lay great offenses to rest.

We live in what seem to be crazy times. Can we even count on having liberty, food, a house, a marriage, you name it tomorrow? This is why Proverbs 20:6 asks the question:

Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?

We all see and I especially see in my own heart where it has gone astray and yet we’re called back time and again by God. We are the bride of Christ, to be presented without spot or blemish

But what does real faithfulness look like? It starts with doing what you’re supposed to do. With showing up at work and working diligently. With doing what you told your wife / kids / friends you would do.

It goes from there and works its way out to ministry opportunities. As a Christian, to quote Mack Stiles (who will be at my church’s Men’s Conference “Act Like Men” this weekend), “my life is forfeit.” We have been bought by Christ, how could we not be faithful and serve others? Then as we live out the Gospel (also summed up in 1 Corinthians 15:3-5) it will overflow. We’ll make disciples of all nations, starting with our families, then churches, then communities, and go on and on!

But remember, it starts with being a faithful man.

Some ways we can be faithful men in F3:
1. Show up to workouts regularly and consistently (make the HC!).
2. Intentionally get to know other PAX while working out.
3. Intentionally get to know other PAX outside of F3 (that’s the 2nd F ICYMI).
4. Sign up to Q! This not only will humble you (the Q is not about you but about serving the men who show up and trust your leadership) but also it serves the AO-Q. The best problem to have is that the AO-Q cannot get a Q in. This happened last summer at Shamrock. Let’s make it happen again!
5. Post a backblast!
6. Ask an AO-Q or the Nantan and other men how you can serve them.
7. Pray for your F3 brothers.
And so much more.

So ask yourself the question that Proverbs 20:6 asks:
Many a man proclaims his own steadfast love, but a faithful man who can find?

MOLESKIN:
Some people tried to troll me with SSH’s as suggested exercises. I hate to have to qualify it but we can be SO MUCH MORE CREATIVE than that overused exercise! CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

So no matter how far down the road we’ve gone God is faithful to discipline – and I do mean discipline and not punish His children. We can fight and kick and scream but He will bring us back. As many of you know that’s what happened to me over 2 years ago and this Sunday I will be baptized – and for a second time.

This can be controversial to talk about even among Christians, but I think it’s good we can have Christ-honoring and respectful conversations about it.

Baptism signifies we are following in obedience to Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 28:19-20. Baptism is for the symbolic washing of regeneration of sins. There may be some here who disagree but I think the Bible makes it clear. That is not the main point of today though I do believe it is critical to make because of the salvific implications of those who believe in baptismal regeneration (which I believe the Bible does not teach). That is another conversation and I’d be glad to talk to you about it – but here are 3 things about baptism for you to consider today:

1. If you have been baptized, revel in what God did to bring you to the point of salvation. See how Jesus pursued you, disciplined you, and brought you who were far off to be near. Look at the sin you have committed against a holy God and how He was so gracious and merciful to pursue you, His bride to be, to the ends of the earth:

Ephesians 2:13 – But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ.

2. If you have not yet been baptized, why not? Most likely there is sin of which you need to repent of. It was for me. I am still in need of repenting daily. Do what so many have done. And if you’re questioning this, just remember it is the person says he is without sin who likely has the most (plank/speck).

Acts 2:38 – And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

3. If you are planning on being baptized (like me this Sunday), do not delay without a godly cause (and talking it over with your pastors).

My story (this is an ongoing story from previous posts):
For me, it was a strange time after I believe I was actually saved to not be baptized a second time for the past 2 years. I had led a life of decades-long unrepentant sin. I was a dead tree. God made me alive but I was not quick to seek to be baptized (especially without having reconciliation from many around me who had very justifiable reasons for great skepticism about my repentance). Then a worldwide pandemic hit about the time I was going to take a class and I took the first baptism class (part of the process at my church).

Romans 6:1-4
6 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it? 3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

So today join me by repenting and being baptized. Every one of you for the forgiveness of sins.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Where were you on the night of June 23, 2019? @5k gave me this idea in 2020. This is another thought in parallel to that but about the next step after but alongside repentance – confession. The main points of what I’m saying below come from a sermon linked here – Doug Wilson – Confession of Sin.

So where was I on June 23, 2019? I was having years of my sin exposed. There’s quite a bit more to this, but you can read Let The Word of Christ Dwell in JUCO Richly and Look a Turtle (Press On!) for more of the story. The JUCO PAX know it well as they have walked diligently with me for the past nearly 2 years. But the point I’m getting at is that June 23 I had an option and was literally asked “is there anything else you need to tell me?” I chose to hide my sin rather than confess. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 28:13 “Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy.” This was so very true of the decision I made and the consequences that have followed me even to this day.

So today we’re discussing confession of sin, defined here as “an ongoing form of spiritual housekeeping.”

1 John 1:5-10 – 5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

From here we have 2 images to discuss and a final application / discussion point:

Image #1 – Two houses where large families live. One is always messy and the other is always cleaned up.

All other things held equal, the difference between the two is one thing: the one that is cleaned up is clean because when a meal is eaten, the dishes are washed / put in the dishwasher right away. When clothes are dirtied, they are put in the laundry hamper. When toys are played with, they are picked up right then. In the other house, “it can be done this Saturday” is the refrain commonly heard.

The same is true of confession – as Romans 10:8 says “But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim);.” When we confess our sin regularly, we keep and restore fellowship just as we regularly clean our houses.

But what if this has not been our habit? Keep reading.

Image #2 – a cluttered, dusty garage that we haven’t cleaned for 20 years.

Where do we start?! It’s so messy, so dirty, so… could it just be set on fire and everything in it be burned up so we don’t have to deal with it? The thing to do is to pick up the one sheet of paper, the one dirty towel, the (insert area of conviction in your life that you’re avoiding dealing with by confession & repentance right now) and deal with it. You don’t have to dig all the way to the floor (though you may need to at some point to be able to walk in the garage). The analogy is this: we aren’t responsible for confessing sins we’ve forgotten about. Confess the ones you do know about, and not only will be weight be lifted but also your memory will improve.

Hebrews 12:1-2 – Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.

God will honor your diligence, but not your slothfulness and excuse-making. Confession begins now and it may take some time. It might be tempting to feel it’s too much or too overwhelming, but deal with the one thing the Holy Spirit is working on in your heart now. You will not regret it as I did.

Application point / discussion:
When you confess, especially before the Lord, we are also encouraged to confess (appropriately) to others as a means of grace that God uses to sanctify us and willingness to make restitution, as a means of accountability, or a combination of both. When most men in F3 sin, they sin against their wives (as I did). That means that when we sin, both when it’s obvious and evident and especially when we want to hide it, we need to first confess it to the Lord because it’s against Him primarily, first, and foremost (Psalm 51:4) but also to the human against whom we sinned (James 5:16).

But what if we’ve done this thing over and over? What if we’ve gone long in sin and don’t think we’ll be believed? Wilson suggests the Word points us to two ways of doing this:
The Slow (or Steadfast) Way – by walking out repentance over 20 years (which is applicable especially when we cannot wisely make confession or restitution)
The Fast Way – by confessing additional sin (explained below).

Now you might be thinking “why would I make things worse by telling on myself more here?!?” And you’d be right – it may make things worse. But only at first. The true motivation behind confession is seeking restoration of the relationship that was broken by sin. We do this with the Lord and only He can truly forgive sin. But in the same way we love because He loved us (1 John 4:19) we also do that with one another because He has forgiven us (Matthew 6:15; Matthew 18:35). So, when we confess our sin AND additional sins along with it, we show that we’re not just looking to smooth things over but instead are seeking to show true repentance (as marked by the things in 2 Corinthians 7:8-11) and genuine sorrow.

Sin clutters, gets in the way, entangles your feet. The next time you’re failing over and over again remember it’s impossible to live a godly life with unconfessed sin. Stop trying to be good with unconfessed sin in your life. Take off the backpack (or, in F3 terms, the rucksack) and run. Confess immediately, presently, and as fastly & steadfastly as you can. Trust God with the outcome. It is worth every moment of freedom from sin and in the long run will reap a harvest of righteousness.

COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA
9 PAX – 1 per each of the 9 holes we were supposed to play today!

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Trying something new. You could fail. But one characteristic of Christians, especially of men who are Christians, is that we do not play it safe. We are called to lay down our lives as Christ did for us- for our family & friends. We don’t just take risks to be taking risks or to make us look good- we take risks not knowing how they will turn out here. Today we didn’t get done with all 9 holes on the disc golf course. There are varying degrees of risk but as Christian men we are called to consider 3 things related to risk:

1. Risk it – “Courage is being scared to death, but saddling up anyway.” – John Wayne (my pastor quotes him often). Scripturally we can look at Psalm 27:14 – Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!
2. Risk it for the right things. (choose that biscuit wisely)
James 4:15 says “if the Lord wills, we will do this or that”
We do wise “Risk vs. Reward Analysis”, but we know that we need to know what Hill to die on. Calvary is one of them with Christ as our example.
3. Risk it – but wait for the Lord
When we take risks, we don’t know how things are going to turn out in the details. Ultimately we do (Revelation 21-22 tells us what the end result of Genesis 3), but as we see throughout the Bible we say “how long O Lord?” Isaiah 64:4 tells us what we have to continue to do:
From of old no one has heard or perceived by the ear, no eye has seen a God besides you, who acts for those who wait for him.

So. Take a risk. For God. And wait for Him to act in that risking until He fulfills it.
