“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men,” Colossians 3:22-23 ESV

Red Writer said that he is a recovering people pleaser. He talked about how part of being a H.I.M. (High Impact Man) is rejecting passivity. It’s easy for us as men to either check out of the mundane things or shrink back from the things that make us feel intimidated, pressured and afraid. But as men we must refuse to be passive and live our life on purpose and with greater purpose. That greater purpose is always found when we lift our heads up out of our boredom and stress, and see that we have a Heavenly Father and His gaze is always on us. He sees our weakness, he sees our frustration, he sees our fear; and He still loves us. His gaze and his unconditional love is the fuel that drives us in the mundane and the stress, to stay engaged and reject passivity.

When we talk about being a HIM we talk a lot about making an impact on our world. We talk about how we can “happen to our day” instead of “our day happening to us”. In order to make that impact, we have to get ready to face our day. PSALM 16:2 says “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing”. This is where we start… from a place of gratitude to God. When we acknowledge that apart from Him we have no good thing, then it gets us ready to face whatever challenge, hardship, victory we face. As HIMs, we always point to something larger than ourselves. I can’t keep spiritually improvising this, I have to take the time to remember that “(He) alone is my portion and my cup”… and that “the boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places” (16:3-4).

After Red Writer, our Q, was on all fours “calling the buffalo” during dealers choice abs… he was reminded of a verse that he shared in the BOM:
Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly in my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest on me. That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

“Gentleness is strength and power under control”

As men in today’s culture, gentleness is not a celebrated characteristic. Gentleness, to us, usually means weakness at it’s best and femininity at it’s worst. But when we look at the scriptures, it’s one of the chief characteristics of being a HIM / man of Christ. Paul says it’s a fruit of the Spirit that we should bear. Scripture says “let your gentleness be evident to all”.

When we look at the masculinity of Jesus, we see that gentleness is a chief trait of our Master. Matthew 26, on the night he was betrayed and arrested, Jesus said to Peter: “Put your sword back in its place, for all who draw the sword will die by the sword. Do you think I cannot call on my Father, and he will at once put at my disposal more than twelve legions of angels?” He could’ve laid the boom at any moment. He had all the power in the world. But he humbled himself and died for us instead.
