Little Known Facts about Laziness #4

First a quick review:
Laziness #1
Laziness #2
Laziness #3

#4 They can’t make lemonade…

We have an expression, when life gives you lemons… make lemonade! The idea is grow where you’re planted, make the most of your situation, be content, etc.

Consider this verse:

Whoever is slothful will not roast his game, but the diligent man will get precious wealth.

— Proverbs 12:27

This this guy has the game, but it’s raw. He won’t roast it. I’d hate to hear his kids at that dinner. So close…

Another verse to consider:

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth.

— Proverbs 26:15

Wow, what a picture. He has food, it’s prepared (at least he’s gotten further this time), it’s in the dish, his hand is in the dish but it’s just too much. Can’t get it to his mouth. Don’t even ask him to chew. It better be soup for this guy.

Obviously this is being a little extreme with a touch of sarcasm. Be careful not to dismiss this as not you. The challenge is to consider your life, thoughts and motives. Are you this guy? Am I this guy?

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Monday Kickflip shared about family discipleship through key moments
Wednesday Commission shared about family discipleship through teaching/training.
Today I will share about family discipleship through modeling. When I think of modeling I think of Deut 6:5-8.

5 You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, and when you walk by the way, and when you lie down, and when you rise. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.

— Deuteronomy 6:5–8 (ESV)

  1. The first thing to notice: the priority of God. Out of our love for God comes our motivation for discipleship. He must come first. And he wants to be first at everything! He wants us to love him with every part of our person.
  2. The second thing to note is when to model. All the time! There is literally never a bad time. Going to bed and getting up. Sitting and walking. We’re always modeling and there is never a bad time to be teaching about God and his character.

When do you model for your family? Some pax shared times they model. Praying for meals and at bedtime, reading God’s word, etc.

The challenge today is to first follow God with everything. Second, take every opportunity to share with your family along the way.

Continuing some little known facts about laziness.

#2 They don’t know they’re lazy! https://f3knoxville.com/juco-lazy-morning-2/

Little known fact about laziness #3: They are visionaries!

Proverbs 13:4

The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied.

Proverbs 21:25-26

The desire of the sluggard kills him, for his hands refuse to labor.
All day long he craves and craves, but the righteous gives and does not hold back.

The lazy have desires and a vision for change or improvement. They crave and have ideas and plans but come up empty. A vision or idea by itself is good and important but ultimately means nothing. It usually takes hard work, dedication and persistence to bring about a vision.

Recently I was challenged with a study to work on for my marriage and family. I signed up for it but now realize how much work it is going to be. It’s going to be hard and challenging. It’s going to take some work and dedication.

My challenge and the challenge for all of you, is to not just have a vision. Follow through, take a look at yourself and see if you’re one of the lazy.

Little known facts about laziness #2

little known facts about laziness #1

They don’t know they’re lazy

Prov 26:16

The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes then seven men who can answer sensibly.

Proverbs paints a picture of the lazy and challenges us to take a look at ourselves. Is this me? What areas is this happening in my life? If I feel convicted and deny it, watch out! When I’m lazy I don’t know it and have all the excuses no matter how many reasonably people point it out to me. 😬 ouch!!

This is something I’ve been challenged with recently in my own life particularly with my family. Being intentional with spending time with kids and wife and not turning off at the end of the day.

This is our challenge today

Little known facts about Laziness #1

Lazy are good at risk assessment

Prov 22:13

The sluggard says there is a lion outside. I shall be killed in the streets!

Notice the sarcasm. Proverbs isn’t very gentle to the lazy.

Prov 26:13

The sluggard says “There is a loin in the road! There is a loin in the streets!”

Again about the lion in the road. The lazy guy sure is milking this lion excuse. This is repeated twice which is interesting. Some of the sharpest criticism in proverbs is directed toward the lazy.

Prov 20:4

The sluggard does not plow in autumn. He will seek out the harvest and have nothing.

At  least the excuse has changed here. The sluggard has moved on. The idea of autumn is that it’s a little cold or chilly. It’s just a little hard to do the work right now. Something to keep in mind, I might have to try it out next winter.

Proverbs paints a picture or holds up a mirror. This is what laziness looks like. We have a chance to look at it and consider if it’s us. What in our life might look like this.

Today, consider this picture. Do you see yourself?

More little known facts about laziness to come.
