19 HIMs for the launch of Asylum Daybreak
CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

I often talk about quotes and they always get me thinking about stuff. As I take on this new leadership role, I think about a quote from Pablo Pisccao that says “The meaning of life is to find your gift”.

I’ve been through several leadership development programs over the years and had 360 reviews, etc and gift that always comes up for me is I’m dependable. When I take something on, I do what I say I’m going to do, and I do it 100%. Don’t have to check in and follow up because it’ll be done.

Going back to Picasso, the second half of the quote is, “The purpose of life is to give your gift away”. So as I assume this new role I hope that I can give my gifts to Asylum Daybreak.

So, the quote is “The meaning of life is to find your gift and the purpose of life is to give your gift away”. So I ask each of you to think about that. What are your gifts and who are you giving them to?  Is there an aspect of your life that could really benefit from your unique gift? And if so, are you willing to give it to them?

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Today I want to talk a little bit about the pilot Neal V. Loving

  • Loving was born in 1916
  • Was passionate about being a military pilot from a young age but had to switch his focus to aeronautical engineering upon discovering that the Army Air Corps did not accept Black aviators (the US AIR FORCE wasn’t established until 1947- TRIVIA QUESTION!).
  • He helped found an all-black squadron of the Civil Air Patrol, a volunteer training program for young pilots. This led to a horrific crash while flying for the patrol and left him a double amputee. When the doctors removed his second leg, they estimated a 50-50 chance of survival. He did survive, and was fit for protheses.  He recalled being asked by the prosthesis fitter what size shoe he would like to have with his new legs.  What a question!

He was made an offer to visit a local municipal airport.  He was hesitant, but ultimately agreed, and when he got there he felt his passion for flying returning, and was given the opportunity to climb into the cockpit again.  While on his first flight back, as he says, “I entered a 180-degree turn followed by a stall entry and spin, the same sequence of events that led to my accident. The ground rushed toward me, spinning in a familiar blur of green and brown. I recovered quickly and returned to level flight. My co-pilot leaned forward and patted me on the back. I smiled in return, happy in the realization that the fears or emotional scars that might destroy my love of flying had not materialized.”

After returning to the cockpit, Loving continued his love of aviation by:

– launching his own flight school

– building experimental rading planes. One of Loving’s airplane designs is on display at Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

– Earning a degree in aeronautical engineering

– Conducting research for the Air Force, retiring in 1982 and

– publishing his memoir in 1994. He died in 1998 at age 83.

What fears do you have that are keeping you from pursuing your goals?

F3 WELCOME & DISCLAIMER
WARM-O-RAMA:

warm up stuff

THA-THANG:
I had a stack of about 30 or so cardboard pieces with different exercises and quantities on them. The PAX grabbed an exercise and ran to the next cone, roughly 30 yards away and did the exercise and quantity. Then they ran back to grab another card and brought it up to the cone as well. We continued until all cards were brought to the next cone. We repeated the process along a marked path. Some runs were longer than others, and we also picked up additional cards along the way. Exercise included were as follows: Merkins, squads, toe touch planks, inchworms, Burpees, dry docks, crunches, big boy sit ups, side straddle hops, jump, squats, and maybe a couple more I can’t remember. Quantities varied from five Merkins to 30 dry docks.

MARY:
Not much in terms of at work today. We just finished the last couple minutes with a round of ring of fire inchworms

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
What is a chiral molecule?

A molecule is said to be chiral if the object and its mirror image are non-superimposable, just like our right and left hand. They are essentially the same but completely different. One hand when placed over the other on a table do not line up, but when placed up against them selves they do. In the case of the well-known chiral painkiller, ibuprofen, the (S) or right -enantiomer has the desired pharmacological activity while the (R) left -enantiomer is totally inactive. In the case of Thalidomide, The R-enantiomer is an effective sedative, which has a soothing effect that relieves anxiety and makes the patient drowsy; while, the S-enantiomer is known to cause very serious teratogenic birth defects.
We can see this example with God. God created us in his own image when looking at us, we may look like him, but we are way different than he is. The difference that separates us from him is sin. When we separate ourselves from him we can become ineffective or even toxic and deadly. So how can we change this? Turn away from sin and come closer to God. Read his word, pray to him, follow his commands. When we turn towards him we change.

Two Words: Don’t Forget

Megan and I went to a wedding last night, and then a few hours later went to the funeral and burial of my grandfather. The beginning of a new life and the celebrating/mourning of a life well lived. As the newly-wed couple were exchanging their vows at the wedding last night, these two powerful words popped up in my head: don’t forget. Don’t forget the vows I made to my wife 3 months back, or the man I promised her to be. Then today, we fellowshipped with a hundred or so folks, not forgetting the HIM that my grandfather was.

Because the reality is, at least for me, is that it is easy to forget. In the busyness and distractions of life, it’s easy to forget things. “Don’t forget” has been all up in my face the past week, and these two back to back events really hit home.
