Big Ball 2021 Year In Review

THE SCENE: 55 and damp, thankfully the rain stopped just in time for us to run around outside
F3 WELCOME & DISCLAIMER
WARM-O-RAMA:

SSH, Amazon’s Shoulder Shredders, Tempo Squats, Cherry Pickers
THA-THANG:
Like last year, this work out served as a recap of memorable beat downs from this year at the Big Ball. Everything we did was something someone else introduced us to or was based off another work out

  • Control Freak Burpos (Night Shift from NC): Burpos (Burpees minus the jump, staying in a squat when standing) on a “control freak” cadence, meaning each position in the exercise was determined by how I called it out during the count. Example, one rep we went 1-2-3-4-3-4-3-4-5-6, meaning we did 3 push ups in the burpo. 10 reps total
  • Plank Frog (Fixer Upper): Like leap frog but in a plank. Two lines formed, everyone held a plank, whoever was in the back of the line jumped over everyone else and took place in the front of the line in a plank again. We did this until everyone crossed the field.
  • Billy Madison/12 Days of Christmas (Frizzles/Drive Thru, Wedding Singer, and Huffy): Billy Madison is 12 rounds of escalator, building upon each other from 1 to 12, 12 days of Christmas is the inverse. So in honor of these 4 Q’s we did the 12th round. Each man gave us an exercise, once we had 12 listed we did 10 reps of each followed by a lap around the amphitheater. Exercises were: Flutterkicks, Burpees, Hello Dollys, Long Duck Dongs, Rows, Squat Jumps, Smurf Jacks, Bus Drivers, Big Boy Sit Ups, American Hammers, Calf Raises, and Merkins
  • Doras (Pfieffer): Pfieffer led us through similar Doras on a game day in the pouring rain. One partner did Burpee Broad Jumps while the other worked on chipping away at 100x Merkins and 100x Squats. We played with Judge Judy rules, so the first pair to finish got to call recover for everyone
  • Building Blocks (Tank): 4 cones were placed on the sidewalk next to the lawn. We started at one end of the lawn and ended at the other. Each cone had an exercise, and reps increased by 5 each cone. Round 1 was running to each cone with Merkins (5, 10, 15, 20), then a jog back once finished. Round 2 was bear crawl to each cone with squats. Round 3 was bunny hops with Big Boy Sit Ups

MARY:
I was hoping to finish with some ATMs (Abort) but we ran out of time
COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA
Had Poison from VA and FNG Icebreaker join us
CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Talked about how New Years serves as a great opportunity to not only look forward and set goals and hopes for the future but to also reflect on the past as well. I encouraged us to think through what are things from this past year that we want to hold onto as we move forward and what are things we want to reach for next year. For me something that hits both those categories, which has been my closing word after every Q this semester, has been continuing to develop the habit and discipline of “preaching the Gospel to yourself daily”, as Jerry Bridges puts it

Tree Biscuit Suicide

THE SCENE: 84 degrees with a little breeze.  Felt pretty nice actually. We were expecting it to be hotter.  In the car on the way over it was 94.  Two soccer fields were being used, and one baseball diamond was being used.  Lots of people watching us do burpees…

F3 WELCOME & DISCLAIMER

Four of us started and five of us finished… Yes that’s right we picked one up along the way.  It was awesome to see @icebreakers face light up…. “You guys F3?”… “Yes, come join!” and he did! There’s hope for this country men, if a young man will drop everything and join a tough workout on the spot, no questions asked.  Man I’m encouraged! Thank you @IceBreaker!

WARM-O-RAMA:
In keeping with my Lexicon exploration, which really just starts from the top and goes through ones I havn’t done before:  We did

  • 10 4×4’s
  • 10 Abe Vegotas
  • 10 Absolutions  (after running over to the astro-turf on the other side of park)

THA-THANG:  Tree Biscuit Suicide

A Tree biscuit is

The Short Version:

As a group, Run to an un-slapped tree, slap it, everyone call out the running burpee total,  do A single burpee, repeat.

The Long Version:
  • Scaling:
    • We travel as a pack, if you find yourself falling behind, skip a tree and burpee and keep moseying to catch up.  It’s more fun and less confusing to have the group stay together, especially when we alternate taggers.
    • Scaling is NOT cheating, it’s just scaling, no judgment here. You made it here and that’s enough.
    • We’re going to be zig-zagging all over the park so the better we can stay together the more we’ll be able to keep an accurate count and not leave people behind.  Plus it feels bad to tag a tree without everyone there doing it together.
  • Taggers
    • The tagger is the person closest to the nearest tree. They slap the tree and call out what the burpee running total is about to be. Similar to our cadence exercise routines, the whole group calls out the number and does a burpee.
    • The tagger is typically in the front of the pack, however since we are traveling in a mob fashion that’s not always true.
  • Alternate Taggers
    • Similar to an indian run, each person should take turns being in front and tagging a tree. This makes the workout much more fun.  If you have already tagged several trees then just slowly fade back and let someone else tag the next one.
  • What is a Tree:
    • We don’t do burpees for any old shrub.  Trees should be about 6 inches around and 10 feet tall.  Those pesky crape mertyles were very questionable this am.  #wanna-be-trees
  • No Poison Ivy:
    • In an attempt to not to get too dirty and get poison ivy, we’ll pass trees that are surrounded by shrubs and tall grass. Luckily we are in a very well manicured park where most of the trees have nicely mowed grass leading up to them.
  • Cross Country Baby!!
    • We are going off road for sure.  The ground is very un-even around many of the trees. Be careful when running not to twist and ankle.  And don’t hit your face on a rock or root when doing a burpee in the dirt.
  • Be Loud
    • The louder you call out the number, the more you inspire your fellow brothers!
  • Milestones
    • At 50, 100, 150, 200 make sure the group catches up and circles around the tree, wait a few seconds. Do the burpee.  Celebrating these milestones adds to the encouragement factor.

The first time at Juco we did 156, then at the Asylum we did 200.  This time we did 180 traveling burpees, but we had a little special treat.  At rep #132 we stopped at the sand volley ball courts and did 6 Sand Suicides (sprint across the length of the volley ball court and back) — just because they’re there and a sand lot is too good of an workout  opportunity to pass up.. Am I right??  So if Truck Stop does it again they could probably do more burpees if they cut out the Sand Suicides..

MARY:

Finished up with a little mary.

  • 15 Star Crunches
  • 15 Freddy Murcuries
  • 15 Mountain Parkers

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Thank you @Snaggletooth for turning me on to the Every Man Ministry. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed being on the subscription devotion.  I wanted to read it to the group but couldn’t find it. But here is the one I described.

  • Weapons Grade Plutonium https://www.everymanministries.com/blog/september-21-2019/
  • I tried to encourage the men to “leave the shores of safe, spiritual spin, for the unpredictable rapids of witnessing.”
  • And once God’s man experiences the power of God in this way, no other experience can compare.  It is the ultimate risk-reward setup. Give the signal, turn the key, press the button, and release the power.
  • According to Jesus, God’s man can choose to experience the power of God by deciding to share his faith.
    MOLESKIN:
It was a ton of fun — thanks for the opportunity to join you all in the PMG (PM Gloom) at Truck Stop!

BOM: As described in the book of 1 Samuel, David did not take the advice of his peers which was to seek revenge, retaliate, and kill Saul. Although he had ample opportunity, David was wise enough to call on God for the strength and wisdom for self-control.  People will attack us and hurt us with words and actions.  As much as we really want to, don’t take the low road.  Be like David and call on God.  Don’t let someone else’s sins and mistakes cause you to be less of a man.  David was an Old Testament HIM that we could learn from.

Moleskin:  Friends don’t let their friends skip leg day.  The Men of the JUCO burned some goo this morning and should be feeling a little wobbly for a while.  The energy and effort was good this morning.  Way to go, HIM’s!

BOM

I want to challenge you all to be Meek men, Abraham Lincoln said Meekness is not weakness- it is strength under control. Christ said blessed are the meek for they shall inherit the of the earth.

The word meekness always has an association with domesticated animals which I’ve never been crazy about, but when I think about it, an ox hooked to the plow isn’t weak but incredibly powerful because its strength is harnessed for a particular purpose.
Commit your way to the Lord, trust in him and he will act. There are stories about prisoners in Nazi camps who were made to move heavy boulders from one end of a field to the other, only to carry them back again, many of the men were eventually driven crazy, not by the physical toll on the body but by the futility of the task. The apostle Paul says that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.
Don’t waste your strength aimlessly pushing boulders around the prison yard. Let’s stand strong as brothers for God and see what God can do with our harnessed strength.

BOM:

1 Timothy 4:8 “ or while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come.”

Make sure that you have a full spiritual tank to pour out to your family, neighbors and co workers. We are not designed to live this life in our own strength. Quickbooks revealed how he could recall exactly how many F3 workouts he did last year but was really convicted about how he has not pursued the Lord with even half the same vigor.

God desires relationship with us and that we might pursue him. We must give him time to have a relationship with him.

Isaiah 55:6 “Seek the LORD while he may be found; call upon him while he is near;
