COT / BOM

All this week, we’re talking about habits.  For Part 1 on Monday, Guardrail led a discussion about cultivating our hearts in preparation for a habit change – starting a new good habit, killing an old bad habit.  Today we continued talking about habits – as we start a new, or end an old, let’s plan for failure.  Let’s think about what might cause failure and pre-decide on strategies to avoid those or to quickly rebound from them.

When you are starting a new habit, what kinds of things are going to throw you off course?

Stumble:  I’m not making any progress toward my goal.
Did you just set a goal – or did you also define a plan and come up with systems to get you to the goal?  “Systems” are the reminders, queues, routines, notes, people, etc. that you set in place to facilitate your work toward to the goal.  James Clear says “you don’t rise to the level of your goals; you fall to the level of your systems.”  A goal is just a daydream without a plan.  Make sure you have an actionable plan + establish systems to execute that plan.

Stumble:  I’m not seeing change happen as fast I thought it would.
Adopt a long-term perspective.  Have short-term milestones. Especially in the short term, evaluate your progress based on how well you stick to your plan, not your results.  Worry about meeting the plan today – tomorrow worry about tomorrow.  Keep your sights only looking that far out.  If you have a good plan and you stick to the plan, your goal will take care of itself.  Again from James Clear, “You should be more concerned with your current trajectory than with your current results”.

Stumble:  I missed a day, so I guess I’m done.
Sometimes we have an all-or-nothing mindset.  If we fail one time, we think we are a failure.  Like my daughter who is learning to walk, I wouldn’t say to her “just two steps?!?  Come on!“.  No, I say “Two steps! Great job girl!  Now try and again and get three steps this time!!!”  As you are learning to do something new, coach yourself the same way.  Give yourself some grace.  If you miss a day, don’t miss two. Missing one day reduces your chance of success by 5%.  Missing two consecutive days reduces your chances by 40%.

As we start new habits, here are three strategies that we’re going to implement

  1. Create systems to push you toward your goal
  2. Success is sticking to your plan TODAY
  3. If you miss a day, don’t miss two.

You are what you repeatedly do.  Every action you take is a vote for the type of man you want to become.

With that in mind…

  • What good habit do you need to start?
  • What unhealthy habit do you need to stop?

Come back Friday for Part 3 of this Word!

COUNT-OFF & NAME-O-RAMA

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Psalm 103:6-11
6 The Lord gives righteousness
and justice to all who are treated unfairly.
7 He revealed his character to Moses
and his deeds to the people of Israel.
8 The Lord is compassionate and merciful,
slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love.
9 He will not constantly accuse us,
nor remain angry forever.
10 He does not punish us for all our sins;
he does not deal harshly with us, as we deserve.
11 For his unfailing love toward those who fear him
is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth.
Eph 4:26
“In your anger do not sin”: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry,
James 1:19
19 My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry,

Tim Keller on Anger

• Note that God reveals himself as slow to anger. Its OK to get angry. To be like God, however, we need to do it slowly and at the right things.
• Anger is not the opposite of love; hate is and the ultimate form of hate is indifference
• Anger has a basic goodness. In this form is it response to love being threatened.
• What do we get angry about? There’s our loves and maybe our idols.
• On the flip side, what are things that should be getting angry about but don’t?
• In Mark 11, Jesus got angry about sin in the temple keeping Gentiles away from God. Yet, in his anger we are told he began to teach the people. He was in control of himself the entire time.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Read a book over the Summer call the “Book Thief”.  It is written with the narrator as death.  Death takes the souls of everyone who has died.  Death is not angry, mean, or have any malice.  It is just his job to take souls once someone dies.  Every once in a while there is a soul that is so much lighter because that person has given most of themselves away in this life so there is not much to pick up and carry away. None of us gets out of the life alive.  Take the time to give yourself away in this life so you will be the lightest of souls taken to heaven.

“His soul sat up. It met me. Those kinds of souls always do – the best ones. The ones who rise up and say “I know who you are and I am ready. Not that I want to go, of course, but I will come.” Those souls are always light because more of them have been put out. More of them have already found their way to other places.”

Markus Zusak, The Book Thief

17 Men.  No FNG’s. Coxin was visiting us from South Carolina.
CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

I recently led a group at a Day Treatment Program.  The program is for people with mental health problems.  Some have experienced depression, some extreme anxiety, some Bipolar Disorder, and some even have been diagnosed with Schizophrenia.  These people have faced hard times.  Most can no longer work because of their disorders.  Most were on disability and living what we may call “marginal lives.”

I have led the group many times and we have a topic for each group meeting (e.g., coping with depression, the importance of exercise. budgeting, substance disorders).  The topics are wide and varied.

Because music and lyrics to songs are important to so many of us, I thought it would be fun to have a group where each group member shared lyrics to one of their favorite songs.  I asked the members to have their songs ready in advance.  When the members shared their songs, I was surprised to find that almost every one of them shared a religious song.  When the members talked, they talked about why God is important to them.  I knew that some members might share religious songs but I did not think that such an overwhelming majority would.  Some of these group members attend church but certainly not all of those who shared the religious songs attend very regularly.  Yet, here they were, sharing why these songs were so meaningful and helped them in their lives.  In my work as a therapist I have had quite a few people tell me that, despite coping with incredible depression, they believe in and need God.  They have told me that God is what gives them hope.

The fact is that God is for ALL of US.  He is not just for the happy, the people who “have it together”, or the folks who attend church regularly.  Who did Jesus tend to associate with?  Everyone, not just the elite, the religious, but the poor, the hookers, the bums.  This is a messy world full of people who don’t have everything together.  But we need God.  And it is good to know that God is for us.
