CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
In Mere Christianity, Lewis discusses the way in which we are accountable for our moral decisions. He points out that we should not be much invested in the practical outcomes of our actions, because these are dependent in large part upon circumstance, both of ourselves and our surroundings. He points out that while resisting drink may be only a mild strain for a man not inclined to drunkenness, for another it may be a monumental effort of the will to go even an hour. While we tend to judge the sober man more favorably than the man who resisted only an hour, God accounts for all the “raw material” we were given. Rather, His interest is the way that each choice is affecting the kind of person we are becoming, every tiny choice leading us either to be more heavenly or more diabolical. He goes further, using the analogy of war, to point out that every small concession we make to our vices is territory that we have surrendered to the enemy, from which he can launch later assaults.

I experienced this quite clearly yesterday when, at the end of a long meeting, we entered into an hour long spiral where all the work was finished, but folks kept wanting to restate and rehash the decisions, tediously extending the meeting without gain. I got frustrated, and as a concession, allowed myself unrestricted access to my candy stash while I annoyedly waited for the end. This morning, I could see clearly that this one concession had cascaded into a series of poor decisions for the rest of the night including extra dessert, extra drinking, and an inordinately late bedtime for the whole family. [I didn’t know this when I gave this Word live, but this culminated in my kids struggling to get ready and my son being late to school].

My takeaway was this: don’t waste time congratulating myself because of how good things are, it’s largely not my doing. Instead, keep my eyes on things eternal, by making good decisions, with special attention to the temptation to make small concessions, because these small decisions will be seeds that grow up.

Read the verse below about God’s sovereignty. I would think if I really believed God is sovereign, I wouldn’t worry so much. And I also think I would find more assurance and comfort in following Christ’s example and become a servant of those around me.
MOLESKIN:
Who does majesty, glory, and power belong to?
Who is righteous in all His ways and never wrong?
Who is God? Sovereign
Who is awesome?
Who do all men depend on for life and breath?
The author of life and death
The often overlooked but still He’s all-seeing, all-knowing
Holding all creation in its place, the God of wrath and grace
The one who could crush every idol man would rather chase
And leads men to the narrow gate, through these crooked paths we navigate
This world exists cause You’ve commanded it
So is Your hand in it?
Or have you handed it over to man and turned away and abandoned it?
Did you try your best and then left man to handle the rest?
Will your plans find success or should we second guess
When world leaders are deceivers, eager to puff their chests?
Is life a game of chess? Do you have these kings in check?
With so much evil how can we believe you’re good?
But I finally understood when I saw that man nailed to wood
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
Would like to play two hand touch football on the 24th if we can get enough people to commit to coming to the beatdown. Maybe bring the young men out too?

“I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.” – Jack London

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
We talked about loss and I shared this prayer:

Lord Jesus, thank you for guaranteeing the Day of no more death—whether by “natural causes” and aging, way too early “Homecomings,” or by senseless acts and dark circumstances. Though you have already removed death’s “sting” (1 Cor. 15:55-56), it still slaps us in the face, buckles our knees, and rocks our sensibilities,.

Thank you for validating our shock, encouraging our grief, and giving us tears. Standing before your friend’s grave, you wept before you raised Lazarus to life. You revealed your anguish before you exercised your power. Death is a violation. It’s not the way things are supposed to be.

It’s only because of your death and resurrection, we now gratefully affirm death isn’t sovereign, you are. Sin didn’t triumph, you did. Our funeral doesn’t get the last word, you do. Jesus, you are the grace giver and grave robber. Death’s keys are in your hand, and so are we.

With the same hand you will wipe every tear out of eyes, reach into our painful stories of loss now. We still have questions, but we don’t question your goodness and faithfulness. Because the Gospel is true, to be absent from the body is to be present with you. Life is Christ and death is gain. Our mourning is for this brief, painful moment; but eternal joy will come in the morning. Thank you, and So Very Amen.
