Welcome to my third anniversary…when I joined I had the pleasure of joining Trolley’s deck-of-pain.  Since then, I inherited the deck and we will keep that going.

We will take turns drawing from the deck and touring campus to perform the workouts.  The kicker is to push yourself in the mosey to each location (not quite a jail-break).

  • Upright merkins – maintenance center
  • Reverse bear crawl up the stairs at the library
  • Burpee-broad jumps at the performing arts center
  • Pull ups at the rec-center
  • CMU carries up the stairs at the rec-center
  • squatted side-shuffles in the 05 parking lot

What does this holiday season and specifically Christmas look like for you.

It may be a time of hardship and sadness because of a loss in the family, which breaks some tradition…

It may be easy to think about the self enjoyment of a break from work…

It may be all focused on the presents and what we want out of it…

We need to remember that it’s an opportunity to give or help others that may be in need.  We need to remember why we celebrate this time of the year and what Jesus has done for us.

Also, it’s the perfect time to start a new tradition, relax, reset your mental state.  I’ve been reading the Bartholomew’s Passage book with the kids to get them in the habit of reflecting this season and while it may be hard to corral the kids at times, I’ve seen improvement in their desire to read it and remove some of the consistent materialistic attitudes.

Spend time with your families and take care this holiday season!

We have an expression, when life gives you lemons… make lemonade! The idea is grow where you’re planted, make the most of your situation, be content, etc.

Consider this verse:

Whoever is slothful will not roast his game, but the diligent man will get precious wealth.

This this guy has the game, but it’s raw. He won’t roast it. I’d hate to hear his kids at that dinner. So close…

Another verse to consider:

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth.

— Proverbs 26:15

Wow, what a picture. He has food, it’s prepared (at least he’s gotten further this time), it’s in the dish, his hand is in the dish but it’s just too much. Can’t get it to his mouth. Don’t even ask him to chew. It better be soup for this guy.

Obviously this is being a little extreme with a touch of sarcasm. Be careful not to dismiss this as not you. The challenge is to consider your life, thoughts and motives. Are you this guy? Am I this guy?

What is Generosity?  It can be defined as “the virtue of giving good things to others freely and abundantly.” When we think deeply about this definition, three parts stand out clearly. Generosity is giving “good things”, giving “freely”, and giving “abundantly.”

We can deepen our experience of generosity by moving from acts of generosity to cultivating an attitude of generosity. When we embody an attitude of generosity, the good things we share expand out from deep within our hearts as an offering of freedom.

When we practice generosity, the “good things” that we give can take many forms. Certainly, some “things” are tangible items like toys, blankets, and food. Giving material things to help others is both a valuable and needed act of generosity. We can also give things like our time, our talents, and our full presence when we serve.

There is a very important lesson surrounding generosity: everyone connected to generosity wins – the recipient, the giver, and all who learn of it. Generous living is a wonderful way to live!

THA-THANG:
Mosey to parking lot, then bear crawl to first set of parking spots and do 5 BBS . After that, alternate between lunges and bear crawls at at each set of parking spaces across the parking lot with 5 BBS in between. Bear crawl for the final one and perform 5 BBS to finish.

Mosey to the coupon pile and partner up for a DORA. One partner will rifle carry (farmer carry or other carries acceptable also) around first median at end of parking spots while other performs an exercises as follows:

  • 100 – Swings
  • 150 – Curls
  • 200 – Rows
  • 250 – Goblet Squats

Mosey towards the flag and stop for some Spicy Dragons along the way.

Spicy Dragons – Same as Welsh Dragon, but do a low plank before each merkin instead of should taps for a lil’ spice.  Remain in plank position the whole time. Bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 1 low plank, 1 merkin, and 1 plank jack. Repeat adding 1 rep to each exercise each time – bear crawl forward 4 steps, do 2 low planks, 2 merkins, 2 plank jacks, … etc. Go until you get to 10 reps each, you’ve covered 30-50 feet, or until your arms fall off – whichever comes first

Each of you made the decision to be here today. You took advantage of an opportunity to be better. You made deliberate choices like laying out clothes and setting alarms. You had advance notice about it…workouts are the same time every time on MWF. For each of us, these deliberate choices are creating habits in our lives.

There are other opportunities that will present themselves throughout our daily lives and it is up to us to make the right choice. We won’t have as much advance notice or even time to contemplate whether or not it’s worth the effort to say yes to it. For me, one of these choices came this last Saturday when my son and I made a trip to the dump. I was given an opportunity to help an older lady in front of me with her trash and in doing so teach my son a lesson in helping others, but failed to make the right choice and missed the opportunity before me.

I’m confident that I’ll do better the next time I have an opportunity come up, but I encourage each of you to learn from my mistake and take advantage of the opportunities before you.  Often we think that teaching our children how is in BIG moments or in manufactured ones this time of year, but often it’s the small, organic, teachable moments of everyday life where there is a small window of time to make a lasting impression on the hearts and minds of our children.

Remember these words from Jesus as opportunities present themselves to each of you.

““Then these righteous ones will reply, ‘Lord, when did we ever see you hungry and feed you? Or thirsty and give you something to drink? Or a stranger and show you hospitality? Or naked and give you clothing? When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters, you were doing it to me!’”

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Thankful to be back after a week + absence. I went to Nashville for a few days to visit my parents. Thought I had avoided the local school bug being gone but it turned out that I caught a case of the flu anyway. It was a very mild case but I did have fever on and off for two days. I worked from home and recovered over the weekend.

While away and as we move into a time of Thanksgiving, I thought about how fortunate I was to have a job that allowed me some flexibility while I was sick. I was thankful to have loving parents to visit, thankful for my kids, and my close friends here in Knoxville. I’m also thankful for the men continuing to lead and encourage here at F3.

1 Thessalonians 1:2-10

In 1st Thessalonians, Chapter 1, Paul is writing to the church there in Thessalonica and gives thanks to them for their work of faith, labor of love, and steadfastness of hope in times of great suffering and persecution. They became examples and encouragement for other Christians in the area and they did this with the “joy of the Holy Spirit”. Paul was thanking God for them. At the end of the chapter, Paul says “you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to wait for his son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.”

In many ways, you guys today are encouraging others with how YOU lead and serve. And I want to thank God for each one of you. You are being an example and positive influence to me and those around you. That makes a difference and it deserves recognition. So take some time to think about that. Think about and be thankful for how God has chosen you to be his sons and how he has called you out to shine light. Remember that as sons we have already been delivered from the wrath to come. Take that reality into the upcoming holiday season. Keep your eyes on Him and you will not only be more thankful for his blessings, but you will also continue in your blessing of others.
