You Have More Sin Than You Know

Psalm 130: 3.
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
O Lord, who could stand?

On Sunday at church our preacher, Shaun Slate, talked about the passages in the bible from the book of Samuel where David, the man who had pleased God and became King of Israel, lusted for a married woman, Bathsheba. He had those who served him make her come to him. And, he essentially made her have sex with him which led to her pregnancy. He tried to cover up the pregnancy by making sure Uriah, Bathsheba’s husband, went to bed with his wife again so that when she became pregnant he would think the child was his. But, Uriah was busy and couldn’t get home to his wife. David then had Uriah go to the front of a battle, knowing he would be killed. Uriah was killed so that David was essentially a murderer. What this man did was horrific. And this was a man who had served God so well, who had done so many good things.

Our preacher pointed out that the human response, the response that most of us would make is to think, “I would never do such a thing.” But as Shaun Slate pointed out, at the right time and under the right circumstances, we too are capable of such sin. As the song by the rock group, Yes, says, “It can happen to you, it can happen to me, it can happen to everyone eventually.”

While in church during the summer I got to thinking of some of my sins that I and even others thought I was incapable of. Some are funny to think back on. Some people call me a mild-mannered guy. But I can think of a time when I was coaching Upward Football. Upward Football and Upward Basketball are religiously based programs. Coaches of the students are supposed to reflect Christ as coaches, being a model to both the kids and families attending. The kids I was coaching were 2nd and 3rd graders playing flag football. The coaches were allowed to be on the field with the kids as the kids were young and we could help them out. Well, on the day I have in mind, the coach of the team we were playing was stretching the rules of the game to give his team a definite advantage. I won’t go into details but it was really unfair. I called the coach out on it. He just smirked and kept it up. Well, that got me boys. Old Lily was riled up and ready to go and he let that other coach know it in no uncertain terms! In the heat of the moment, that coach and I were ready to fight. Fortunately, the head of the whole program was watching the game. He ran out into the middle of the field and separated us, asking what in the world we were doing! Here I was, ready to fight. What a model of love and virtue.

I bring this up as a funny example, but there are other examples of sin from my life that I am too embarrassed to talk about in front of all of you. I have told only a few, including the Lord and my wife, Jan. I still look back on some of those acts and shudder. If you closely consider you own life I am sure each of you can find a few moments that you are ashamed of yourself.

In the passage from Psalms above I didn’t read the verse that comes after verse 3, the one that says “If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities Lord, who could stand?” The very next verse, verse 4, says “But with you there is forgiveness.” I am so thankful we have a Lord who forgives us. We have more sins than we know but God knows. After some of my deepest sins, I wanted to hide them. Guys, I don’t think I could have lived with myself if I had hid them. Thank God that I didn’t. The answer is not to hide those sins. The answer is to go to Him, repent, and ask His forgiveness. Also, go to the one you hurt and ask their forgiveness. By recognizing and admitting to our transgressions, we become better men. We are better able to overcome our transgressions and be the High Impact Men God wants us to be.

Prayers

Prayers for our brothers Brick and Lizzy, each who have gone through difficult times in the last year. Prayers for all of us who need forgiveness and for those willing to forgive. And, prayers for Pluto and his son, Crankbait, who I just learned was in a serious accident today and will have surgery.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: 10-year convergence Nov. 8!

COT: Talked about the balancing act between the importance of having and acting upon a set of core values or convictions, whether they be religious, your opinion on how groups should be run, etc., and how it can be challenging to do this as a LEADER, because your actions and decisions will affect other people. And many of those people may have strong convictions as well that are not necessarily aligned with yours. So if the primary basis is a set of beliefs that aren’t universally shared by many in the group, what do you do? Martin Luther King said “A genuine leader is not a searcher for consensus, but a molder of consensus.” I feel I need to work on being able to mold consensus, because that is something I have failed at recently in leadership positions. I need to be more cognizant and respectful of those who disagree with me so that we can find a way forward.

One thing I’ve loved about F3 over the years is that it’s largely a place that is absolutely NOT RUN according to any one person’s personal doctrine. The mission is to support and lift up the guy next to you. Promote servant leadership. Living Third. Issues like politics and differences between specific faiths—even though FAITH is one of our three F’s– are left at the door. So as leaders, I agree with Dr. King in that we need to try to actively create consensus, and find the balance between holding firm to our values while finding solutions and compromises that respect other’s that are affected by our decisions as well.

ANNOUNCEMENTS: GoRuck Event in Nov. Marine Corps Mud Run 9/27.

COT: A Buddhist monk asked his students: “If you’re carrying a cup of coffee and someone bumps into you, why did you spill the coffee?”
Each of his students replied, because someone bumped into me.
“No. The reason why you spilled the coffee is because that’s what you were carrying in your cup.”
If you were carrying water, you would have spilled water.
Then he said something profound.
He said, “Whenever life shakes you, whatever you’re carrying is going to spill out.”
So, if you’re carrying fear, jealousy, anger, greed, that’s what’s going to spill out.
But if you’re carrying love, compassion, kindness, empathy, that’s what’s going to spell out.
So, each day, you should pause and think to yourself, what am I carrying in my cup today?

We Aren’t Equal

Our founding fathers wrote the “all men are created equal.” I believe they were talking about human rights when they wrote that. Because the fact is, we are not all created equal. As High-Heels has pointed out, with effort, determination, and a willingness to work, we can certainly achieve some success living her in the United States. But we are not created equal. Some were born with more intelligence, some with more athletic ability, some with more money and far greater chances in life. In the United States we have public schools and college grants and funding to try to make sure that all citizens can get a college level education. But let’s face it, college just isn’t going to happen for some – the odds are too stacked against them.

We are not equal. Some just have easier lives than others. So, what do we do with that? We can shake our heads, beat our chests, and blame God for it all. Many do just that, always trying to climb that ladder and reach some kind of equality in terms of power, wealth or recognition. I see many people hurt, jealous, angry or bitter because they just haven’t reached that certain rung in the ladder.

But we have another choice in terms of what to do about this inequality. We can love God and our neighbors. We can do what God would have us do which is to accept the gifts we do have and be thankful for it. We can love others and help them out. This opportunity to love and to give to others is something that everyone can have.

I am not created equal to some. So what? God loves me anyway. God loves me for who I am and isn’t comparing me to the fastest, smartest, or kindness human around. I can keep loving God and I can love my neighbor.

Prayers

Prayers for Drum Major’s daughter, Hunter, who got into an MVA yesterday. Prayers of thanks that she is ok and that the people in the other car are ok. Prayers of love and discernment for Drum Major as he figures out options for another car for Hunter as her car was totaled. Prayers of thanks that the wife of Mr. Jinxy is doing well health-wise and that the health scare she had was not serious.
