CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
2 years and 2 months ago, David Greer became Kick-Flip. (He pointed out that I was on Q that day!) Today we know him as a man of character, a leader among men. When he leads, he’s creative, he’s personal, he pushes us. He serves us by leading. So many of his Qs are memorable, the workout, the word, his leadership and drive, his friendship and encouragement. We are all better men because of him and we are glad to give him the Shovel Flag as our AOQ at the Project.
Maybe one of you will be AOQ after him. I hope you will all step up to Q soon. Just as we need Kick-Flip to show up, we all need you/each other to show up. It’s not only how we get better as men and leaders, it’s how we see and experience the diversity and creativity of God in fitting us together, in both our leading and our following. Your strengths pushes us in our weakness and vice versa. We are all disciples, followers/fellow travelers, friends, of Jesus. In Christian friendship, we disciple each other. We encourage each other. We call each other higher up and further in. Friendship is discipleship when Christ is in you. When you Q, you both lead and serve the men around you as friends. It is both friendship and servant leadership.

MOLESKIN:
Much appreciation to Judge and guys from other AOs who came to support and celebrate the passing of the The Project Shovel Flag to Kick-Flip. Shout out to Trolley who began the tradition of taking the picture at the Friendship Bell.

PRAYER:

Ribbed’s wife, men at Equalizer and other AOs whose marriages are struggling, Kick-Flip’s wife and new baby on the way

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Just finished Is This Anything? – Seinfeld

A few things struck me from a self-leadership standpoint:

Relentless pursuit of his priorities. – At one point he talks about when he was young that comedy was all he really wanted to do and he realized that it was a tough way to make a living, but if he could just make enough to buy a jar of Skippy PB & a loaf of Wonderbread each week, he could survive and it would be worth it. – Relentless pursuit of your priorities will mean giving up other good things.

Willingness to fail & the discipline to learn from those failures. Jerry talks about the way he develops new material: the same way that all comics get new material—by going out to the clubs and trying it out. And when he’s in that mode of working on new material, if he goes out and does a thirty minute set and comes away with one bit that gets a laugh, it was all worth it. Here’s a guy who has a rare level of success because he understands and respects how rare success is. If he only fails 90% of the time, it was worth it to him. And he’s going to go home, reflect on what didn’t work, make what did work even better, and try again the next day. I think there’s a lot to be said for being willing to try something new and understanding that even if you fail, you’ll learn.

That’s the challenge for each of us this week: to be willing to make the sacrifices necessary to chase what really matters to you, to not be so scared as to be unwilling to fail, and if you do fail to treat it as a learning opportunity.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

Gen. 15:1 “Do not be afraid, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” God and Abram have a conversation about the covenant between them. There is an odd ritual where a flame passes between the sacrificed animals to show that whoever breaks the covenant will suffer the same fate as the animals.

God does not break His covenant with us, but He does suffer punishment for us by sending His son to die on the cross for our infidelities.

Remember to ask God in prayer, today and every day to show us the areas of our lives where we do not trust in Him. Look to the Lord in His strength; Seek to serve Him constantly.

Malcolm Gladwell – Outliers. All about success. Great book.

Lays his points out through a series of really interesting vignettes—quick read. (Or listen)

Closes the book with this:

“The successful are those who have been given opportunities and who have had the strength and presence of mind to seize them.”

Reflect on the opportunities we’ve been given and how different life could have been

Reflect on how well you’re leading yourself right now

But also reflect on who you know, who has what it takes to succeed and just needs an opportunity.
