Scripture calls us to work. But it also calls us to rest.
Both are built into our DNA. But, we have the free will to choose.

[virtuous-leadership-school] Q3.8 Candor

AO: virtuous-leadership-school
Q: Otis
PAX: Mountain Ice, Scratch-off, Spellcheck, Otis, Borg, Baby Boomer, Mermaid
FNGs: None
COUNT: 7
WARMUP: greet, laugh, pray

THE THANG: Discuss Q3.8 Candor
Candor: graciously telling the hard truth and demanding to hear it from others.
Socratics:
-Are all truths self-evident?
-Are some things better left unsaid?
-What happens if you kill the messenger?
We spent a long time discussing the first Socratic and “truth” in general. It seems wise to contemplate this when we are challenging ourselves and each other to tell the hard truth.

Spur:
-Only hard Truth requires Candor
“While there are many Truths, only the hard ones require Candor. The easy Truths take care of themselves.”
-From hard Truth comes Love and Trust
“The resolve required for people to move from the status quo into the relative unknown toward advantage is fueled by their trust in the leader initiating that movement,” using candor.
-Candor is a two-way street
“For a leader to be virtuous, he must be able to handle the truth.”
We spent time discussing the affect of hypocrisy and strength of relationships.

COT:
Are you a fan or a follower of Jesus?
A fan is someone who admires or shows interest in someone because they’re popular or well know for something. Maybe someone you know knows them, so you claim to know them, but that’s not a relationship.
A follower is someone who has a relationship with someone they look up to or admire. A relationship is made by interacting and having dialog with someone and sharing experiences.
Do you want to be a follower of Jesus, or do you know someone?
It’s laid out very simply in Romans.

Romans 10:9-11 NIV
[9] If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. [10] For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. [11] As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”

COT: Form vs Game
Game in our culture is a willingness to try, to jump in, to have a go. Game in fighting is a little different. It’s a willingness to be punched in the face, to embrace the pain and fear, to lean into the fight and not cower in fear.
The church today trains people in forms, but it has lost the concept of game.
We have Bible form, prayer form, fasting form, serving form, volunteer form,
community form, but what we don’t have is game. So little of what we talk about
on Sundays shows up in real life.
People have forgotten that the point of practice is not the practice itself but to
prepare us to follow Jesus in the real world.

Our discipleship today is often nothing more than the form.
We train and train and train but never do. We read and read and read but never obey.
Resonance is not the same as obedience.
Agreeing is not the same as acting.
Listening is not the same as doing.
Jesus seemed to be baffled by the emphasis on a form-only based discipleship in His day.

““Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you? Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built. But the one who hears and does not do them is like a man who built a house on the ground without a foundation. When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.””
‭‭Luke‬ ‭6‬:‭46‬-‭49‬ ‭ESV‬‬

IPC is YOU v/s YOU…

“If you compete against others, you will become bitter. But if you compete against yourself, you will become better”.

“You are the only thing standing in your own way”

discipline is a choice, a habit, and a strength that grows with practice, enabling one to choose what they want most over what they want now

“Discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most.”
— Abraham Lincoln

The only discipline that matters is self discipline.

“I have discovered this principle of life—that when I want to do what is right, I inevitably do what is wrong. I love God’s law with all my heart. But there is another power within me that is at war with my mind. This power makes me a slave to the sin that is still within me.”
‭‭Romans‬ ‭7‬:‭21‬-‭23‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing. I discipline my body like an athlete, training it to do what it should. Otherwise, I fear that after preaching to others I myself might be disqualified.”
‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭9‬:‭26‬-‭27‬ ‭NLT‬‬

“As iron sharpens iron, so a friend sharpens a friend.”
‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭27‬:‭17‬ ‭NLT‬
