CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

I’m going to tag along on Sargent slaughter’s challenge to be more transparent with our children.

Joel 1:3 Tell your Children of it, and let your children tell their children and their children to another generation

We need to speak of the Gospel and encourage  But we also must discipline.

Hebrews 12:11 All disciple for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness.

Just as Burpee’s don’t feel good, they do produce a result – in the same way, being a disciplinarian doesn’t feel joyful but it does produce kids that understand authority.

Truth is Caught AND taught.  Encourage your kids (verbalize it!) & Discipline your kids.  If they are telling you no, that’s backwards and you are just making it hard for them to understand authority.  Put an end to that or they won’t respect you and your wife today, their boss in a couple years, or God for eternity.)

Challenge:

1) Pray for your kids
2) Speak of Jesus Christ to you kids so they know the root of your discipline and the reason for your encouragement and most of all the Source of your Love

It’s awesome to work out with my 2.0 and have the chance to speak this @Median these words:

Moreover, as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and right way. 1 Sam 12:23
Jesus Christ is that way and together we can seek after Him!

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Discussed the story of Job. He had everything taken away from him due to nothing he himself did. However, Job refused to give up on God. Job’s three friends come to him three different times with some not so great advice.

It’s easy for us to think we know what the answer to other’s problems is and to inadvertenly offer some not so great advice ourselves. Job’s friends had no idea why Job was in the predicament he was in, but made their own assumptions and gave advice based on those. Let’s strive to understand that we do not always see the full picture when others are struggling and we may have a different perspective than they do.

The one piece of advice that we can always give with 100% certainty is to look to God for strength and support.

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:

In the movie, “The American President” the president, played by Michael Douglass says:

“America isn’t easy. America is advanced citizenship. You’ve gotta want it bad, ’cause it’s gonna put up a fight. It’s gonna say, “You want free speech? Let’s see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who’s standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.” You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then you can stand up and sing about the land of the free.”

Tonight, 500 or so students will graduate from Hardin Valley Academy.  Some of them are going to kneel during the national anthem with one possibly being my daughter. One of her best friends is black and my daughter has seen her being discriminated against because of the color of her skin. I’m all for a peaceful protest but do not believe it should be during the national anthem. I’m not sure what will happen but my daughter & I are going to discuss it today.

Our country is so divided & people can’t seem to respectfully “agree to disagree” when we don’t agree on some issue. Our society has lost its ability to have a civil conversation about what’s important to us & respect someone because they disagree.

The solution starts with us. Each of us needs to stand up for what we believe while being civil & loving our neighbor. That doesn’t mean we don’t say what we think but say it with respect for the other person. Our world needs us to listen, lead & love now more than ever.

John 15:13 ESV / 78   Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.

Matthew 22:37-40 ESV /  And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”

“…if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” – 2 Chronicles 7:14

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Guardrail sent me a text ~2 months ago asking me what I’d been working to memorize lately. I’d been slacking on Romans 15:1-7 but I determined that week I’d memorize it. It’s been an encouragement to me since then:

15 We who are strong have an obligation to bear with the failings of the weak, and not to please ourselves. 2 Let each of us please his neighbor for his good, to build him up. 3 For Christ did not please himself, but as it is written, “The reproaches of those who reproached you fell on me.” 4 For whatever was written in former days was written for our instruction, that through endurance and through the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God of endurance and encouragement grant you to live in such harmony with one another, in accord with Christ Jesus, 6 that together you may with one voice glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. 7 Therefore welcome one another as Christ has welcomed you, for the glory of God.

We live in such a time of division. There’s so much information out there. But we can be unified in bearing with the failings of the weak (and admitting when we are weak so our brothers can do this for us). We can choose to bear with those failings (meaning it will be harder for us) and letting whatever scorn and reproach fall on us, remembering that Jesus did it for us. Then as we spend time in the Word, the things that were written in former days, we will endure and be encouraged from those and THAT will give us to glorify God with one voice as a barbershop quartet or a magnificent choir ends on the same note and you get goosebumps from the sound. That is how God will work in and through us as we do these things.

MOLESKIN:

CIRCLE OF TRUST/BOM:
Words are powerful.  God says so.  Throughout the Bible we see a constant theme where gossiping, talking too much, and careless mouths are warned against.  This is something that I struggle with.  It is very easy to get sucked into gossip, especially if it’s true.  But does truth matter when we are using our words to tear someone down? Let’s look at Scripture:

Proverbs 18:21 “The tongue has the power of life and death”

Ephesians 4:29 “Let no unwholesome talk come our of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their deeds, that it may benefit those who listen”

Exodus 23:1 “Do not spread false reports”

James 1:26 “Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves”

Proverbs 10:19 “Sin is not ended by multiplying words, but the prudent hold their tongues”

Proverbs 11:9 “With their mouths the godless destroy their neighbors”

Proverbs 16:28 “A perverse person stirs up conflict”

Psalm 141:3 “Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips”

As you can see, the Lord treats our words and the intent behind them very seriously, even if what we are saying is true.  I would encourage each of you to consider your words wisely, use them to build others up (even if we “feel” they deserve to be torn down).  There is a lot of wisdom in keeping our mouths shut, living a quiet existence and letting our actions speak for us.  There have been so many times in my 39 years I’ve wished I could take something I said back.  Be mindful of what you speak and learn to tame the tongue.
